When it comes to programs like AVG or any other "system critical" software, there are a couple of things to remember: First, programs like AVG, Avast! Anti-Virus, F-Prot and so forth come in TWO types: one is a "free" version that usually boasts less configuration options and other bells and whistles, but will still guard you against virii, the second is the PAID (or "PRO") version, that will have much more flexibility and access to features of the program, not to mention access to 27/7 tech support of a higher caliber than the "free" version. Second, many websites will offer a link to either the free or paid version of these programs, or quite often, both. However, sometimes how the site decides to offer the two different versions can be somewhat confusing, and you can sometimes wind up downloading the paid version. If in doubt, GO TO THE WEBSITE OF THE SOFTWARE MANUFACTURER DIRECTLY and get it from there. Finally, you can see if your ISP provides an internet protection suite for free. Shaw Cable Systems in Canada offers "ShawSecure", for example, that offers virus, firewall, spam control, parental controls and ad/spyware protection that would normally cost $90 for free if you are a subscriber to the service, and it is often NOT "crippled" in any way. You don't give a lot of information in your report, and it sounds like you wound up getting the paid/pro version, which would make the $35 price tag (which would be a year's coverage) make sense. You should have realized something was amiss when you were prompted for any PayPal information of any kind (and then NEVER have entered it btw). In all my years on the Internet (and they have been many), any legit "free" program from a reputable anti-virus provider will NEVER get to the point of asking for any financial information whatsoever. Period. Another clue you're buying something like AVG as opposed to getting the free version, is that the free installation programs will actually have "FREE" in the file name, such as "AVGFree.exe", although this is not the case 100%. Without further information as to exactly how you wound up paying $35 for AVG in deeper detail, I'd venture to say that YOU goofed in your mouse clickery and just blindly followed the links while *happily providing the PayPal info*. In fact, you say IN your report: "I thought I was BUYING avg anti-virus" How can you be "buying" something, and then be expecting to get it for *free*?? If that's the case, you can hardly blame the website for your not exercising some basic common sense and observational skills in noticing that "free" never equates to "enter information to extract $$", and maybe going back a few steps to make sure you weren't DOIN' IT WRONG.
