MRT Services, Inc. is a Loganville, GA-based company that is aggressively recruiting people online to work from home as virtual transcriptionists. They also have an actual office in my town, and they recruit local typists who stop by the office and pick up work each day. There were no negative reports on them at the BBB or on any online forums that I know of, so I began typing transcriptions for them full time. Two months and hundreds of hours of typing later, I am left wondering why they haven't paid me, and why they suddenly stopped all communication.

Until this week, they called me almost daily and gave me as much work as I could handle, and I was often complimented on my work. When I would visit the office, I was often asked if I knew of anyone else who wanted to work for them. On a few occasions, I overheard the recruiter on the phone urging applicants to hurry up and finish their training and testing so they could take on some actual jobs. It seemed like they had more work than they could handle and were doing a booming business. Now I suspect that they continually have to recruit new typists because they aren't paying the old ones.

MRT Services recruits typists on an independent contractor basis, with the understanding that they will be given 1099s at the end of the year. Typists must submit an actual invoice to MRT Services after each job, and are told that once the client pays MRT Services, then MRT Services will pay the typist. Several times and in several ways, it was communicated to me that their clients always pay within 30 days. I was told I would be able to tell when to expect a payment by keeping track of my invoices, and that payments to contractors were placed in a basket in the front office every Friday morning. This has not turned out to be true, and I noticed that on the past few Fridays, there have not been any checks in the basket at all.

The friendly recruiter, who was all smiles for the first two months, turned to ice when I emailed her today and politely asked if there was a check for me up front (she had invited me to ask her about this previously). She sent me a one-line email stating that the bookkeeper will handle the matter--yikes! I sent a follow-up email to the bookkeeper, with a friendly note to two of my contacts at MRT to let them know that I hoped we could work things out because I would like to continue working for them, which got me NO REPLY at all. Nice.

I don't know if this is a red flag that I should have known about, but MRT does require their independent contractors to get a business license to show that they have a doing-business-as name (DBA), and to put their DBA name on their invoices. According to the Georgia Secretary of State, a person can go into business simply by using their own personal name, and aren't required to pay the additional fees and file extra forms to establish any sort of made-up business name. I have done a lot of mystery shopping work as an independent contractor, and none of the dozen or so companies I work for have required me to have a license or DBA name, although they do give me 1099s.

Last week MRT Services sent an email sent to all their independent contractors that mentioned they lost some major clients recently. Maybe they are in a situation where they are simply not able to pay me, but their complete lack of communication tells me that they WILL NOT pay me. That is why I am filing this report.

MRT Services appears to offer the ideal work-at-home situation, and they also give all outward signs of being a legitimate enterprise. I fear that they will be able to continue enticing others like me, using them up and throwing them away, since there is an almost-limitless supply of people who want to work from home. I hope to spare at least some of those people the heartbreak that I am going through right now.

MRT Services, Inc. prides itself in providing exceptional service and client support. Our transcriptionists are the backbone of our business. While we are very sorry that this individual was upset with the timing of payments, all transcriptionists sign an Independent Contractor Agreement, which states that transcriptionists are paid when the job is complete and paid to MRT Services by the client. We are not sure where the 30-day payment time frame mentioned in this complaint came from. We have no way of knowing exactly when our clients will pay for their services, which is why we clearly state this in our Independent Contractor Agreements. MRT Services, Inc. received this complaint on 10/29/07, showing it had been posted on 10/26/07 at 6:13 p.m. The bookkeeper was contacted via email on 10/26/2007 at 2:01 p.m. and this was the first communication she had received from this individual. This complaint was filed within 4 hours of that email, which is in no way sufficient time to review the account and respond in an intelligent manner. This bookkeeper has only been employed by MRT Services for the past 2 weeks and is just becoming familiar with the procedures and policies of MRT Services. Many new policies regarding accounting procedures have already been put into place to ensure timely future payments to our contractors. We would like to address some inconsistencies with that report filed on this website. Please feel free to address each of these concerns with us directly. MRT Services has a policy that requires independent contractors to obtain a business license because we feel it shows proof that they are serious about their transcription ability and are committed to working with MRT Services, Inc. as an independent contractor. There is no legal requirement for the contractors to obtain a business license. We do not ask our contractors to make up a business name, nor do we wish to have them pay any additional fees to work with us. We feel that going through the process of applying for a business license shows commitment. All subcontractors are issued a 1099 at year end for all work paid during the year. MRT Services did not issue an email stating that we had recently lost major clients. Our last communication with the transcriptionists stated that we had experienced changes in our accounting staff and that major changes to collections and payments would be taking place. These changes are to benefit our typists and speed up payments to those individuals. This is a positive change, not a negative one. The communication with the typists explained that there would be cases where individuals would not receive payment every week because we have not been paid for our services. This would explain why there not "checks in the basket," as this individual stated. In 14-years of service, we have never refused to pay a contractor for work that has been completed satisfactorily and has been paid by the client to MRT. In some circumstances of extreme delinquency of payment from our client, we have advanced payments to our contractors. These cases are rare, and typically result in credit holds and deposit requirements of our clients in order to work with us again. We value our typists and wish to continue our tradition of having long-term relationships with these individuals. We do not feel that we have cut off communication with this individual. As soon as the bookkeeper received the message regarding the status of this individuals account she went to work trying to resolve the issue. We feel we provide an excellent work-from-home opportunity. We are a legitimate enterprise and have been certified as a WBENC organization by the Women's Business Enterprise National Council. We offer a valuable service and hold our transcriptionist to a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Should this individual need any further assistance, they have been told that they can contact our office anytime via phone or via email if they prefer. We would hope that this matter is closed and the complaint is removed from our record. Thank you. MRT Services, Inc.
