I took out an auto load several years ago with National City for a 1998 Ford car. The loan was scheduled to be completely paid off March 2006. A few years ago I was late on a few payments, but I did catch up. Apparently National City charged me some late fees for these late payments. I would of happily paid these charges once I had the money but was never notified they were added to my account. During the third year of the loan I no longer received any payment books. I called National City who told me they no longer provide payment books, but send monthly statements. I asked to verify my address here in Charlotte NC, the loan was addressed to my mother who co-signed the loan in Pennsylvania. I asked to have statements mailed to me. Several months went by and I never received a statement, nor did my mother. I called again and updated my address a second time. I made the payments over these few months by calling National City and making a payment over the phone, (Note: National City charges $15.00 for this service). I still never received a statement. I continued to call National City to pay the loan over the phone, and was never notified of the late fee, even after asking how much I owe for the month. I was ALWAYS quoted the normal monthly payment. I inquired about paying the loan online (something they also charge $15.00 for) and was told I could not do this since I don't have a National City checking account. I still never received a statement, nor did my mother after the second call. After becoming sick of paying the bill over the phone, I started mailing the payment to an address in the orginal payment book with a post note that had the account number on it. The amount has always been deducted from my account. I always included a return address on the letter and National City never called or inquired about the late payment fees. When I called National City in Feb 2006 to pay off the loan I was told that I owe over $1400 in late fees. Suprised by the amount I asked to speak with a manager, I was put on hold for over 50 minutes and then disconnected. I called again and was told I must pay and there is nothing they could do. Not only did they not notify me of the fees, they also reported that I only owed $613 to Experian in Decmember of 2005. I have been tracking the account via credit report since I can never get any information from National City. They also reported the loan was Open/Current. No only did they fail to notify me of the late charges, they also failed to report the correct information to Experian if they are now stating that I owe them $1400. My suggestion for anyone who reads this is never do any business with National City. I am still trying to communicate with National City about this issue, but am always told there is nothing they can do. Any help would also be appreciated.
