I have been receiving numerous phone calls to an old work number. Just received an email today from a guy name Eric Smith, who also goes by John Carter, from a New York Attorney Law Firm? Threatening me with all sorts of legal charges from a payday loan that I supposingly took out 2 years ago. He has all my personal information somehow.

Hi,

I got the same e-mail today from an 'Eric Smith'.  It also had all my info at the beginning, told me I owed $950 from a $350 loan received in January 2013 (a loan that doesn't exist), and said it was the last notice before the matter is turned over to the "Federal Department".  It seems like an obvious scam.  There are spelling and grammatical errors and sentences that just don't make sense.  Even though it says not to ignore it, that's exactly what I plan to do.

I think this derived out of a payday loan application that I filled out about 6 months ago.  My dog needed emergency surgery, and I wasn't sure what else to do.  I started getting calls frequently (mostly from people with Indian accents), but they gradually slowed down after I told one after another that I was no longer interested.  I will still get calls about once a month.

I think this fake e-mail notice is related to 2 calls from a man with an Indian accent on my work cell from last Friday and again 2 days ago.  He left a voicemail the first time, and I picked up the on second call.  To try and save a little time and avoid future calls, I chose to tell him he had the wrong number.  He started swearing and calling me a liar so I laughed and hung up.

Is any of that similar?

-Eric
