Ordered a dumpster for the precise work of a two layer roof tear off. Was charged 310.00 for aforementioned job. Three weeks later charged (unauthorized) 250.00 additional to my bank account. Supposedly for being over the allotted weight. I was very specific on what I was doing. Hard to believe my asphalt shingles weighted more than other types of shingles. In addition the audacity of tapping into peoples bank accounts without notice or authorization.

Barbara contracted for the use of a roofing dumpster and she stated that the dumpster would be used for 63 bundles of asphalt shingles that were in a double layer on her roof (a total of 126 bundles/42 squares). Based on her statement the representative suggested a 20 yard dumpster. She agreed. The representative advised her that the fee for the dumpster was $310 which included delivery of the dumpster and disposal of up to 2 tons of material for a period of 7 days. The rep then advised her that if she exceeded 2 tons of material she would be charged $50 a ton for each ton over that amount and $10 per day for each additional day over the initial 7 day rental period. The rep also advised her that tonnage would be rounded up to the next full ton and the amount would automatically be billed to her credit card. Twice during the course of the call, Barbara was asked whether she agreed to these terms and she stated she did.

Upon completion of the roofing job, her dumpster was hauled away and weighed. The gross weight of the haul was 45580lbs. The tare weight (weight of empty truck) was 31980 lbs. The difference (contents of the dumpster) was 13600 lbs (6.8 tons). Rounded up it would be 7 tons. Two tons were included in the initial rate, leaving an overage of 5 tons of material.

Barbara called to object to this charge stating that her container was not even half full and that she should not have been charged the additional tonnage. Weight, not volume, is what led to the additional charges. Barbara believes we should have advised her that she would likely go over her allotted tonnage. There is no way to predict how much a dumpster will weigh at the completion of a rental. Factors such as additional materials, rain, neighbors adding to the load, changes in the scope of the project, are among those influencing the final weight. She was advised in advance of the additional charges and the manner in which they would be billed, if she incurred them.

The weight ticket from the landfill substantiates the additional weight. 43 squares of asphalt shingles weigh about 12,600 lbs (300lbs/square), which equates to about 6.3 tons. Additional weight may have come from dirt on the old shingles, moisture in the shingles, or additional roofing supplies (nails, plywood, etc.). Dumpster rental is not an exact science and all of the variables are controlled by the client. OAKLEAF and Home Depot have no control over what is placed in the dumpster following delivery.

Barbara s complaint was jointly addressed by Home Depot and OAKLEAF and we understand that she was ultimately satisfied with the outcome.
