Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

I received a message on from an individual claiming to be an Officer Steve Martin with the United Nations Legal Department.  He said it was concerning a family member (whom I shall remain namelss) who was in "huge trouble," and I needed to contact him as soon as possible at 605-595-1838, and he would share information about the case with me (which by the way is an unlisted number).

He had a very strong Middle Eastern accent; I had to listen to the message several times to make out what he was saying and there are still a few words I cannot understand.  I could hear a lot of chatter in the background.  He had a very rude and sarcastic tone, especially when he said "Bye," like he was really getting one over on someone.

I have not called the number back yet, and do not plan to, as I am absolutely sure it is a scam.  He/They will probably demand my social security number or bank acount numbers, which I will never provide; I am not stupid.  However, if I continue to get these harrassing calls I will pursue further legal action.  I just wanted to warn people of this malicious intent and put these people/this number out of business!

These a**holes are calling from India or Pakistan using fake american sounding names, their scam is To scare you into paying a Loan that doesn't exist.

Usually by saying they're Officer(Fake American Name) Obvious clue, the heavy accent, hard to understand, or cannot understand this (American Name) Officer?

Their Game plan is to scare you by threats like "Have the police at your door" or "Warrant has been signed" or "You're in big trouble", "You've committed BANK FRAUD" or similar lies.

They usually say they're from "The Department of LAW and Investigation" or similar scary FAKE NAMES (recently they used United Nations Law Division, and more recently the ACS Law division, and even more recently 1st IRS Legal Dept)

You're NOT in trouble, they're just good Liars, Pay them NOTHING, they're only Slimy thieves.

Recently they'ne been changing names at the speed of light This is another name, but the same scammers.

OR IF YOU WANT PROOF THEY'RE THIEVES Tell them to send you verification there's any "Debt" at all, if they start screaming at you, that's proof positive that they're just thieves.

When they call again tell them they're just thieves and hang up, they can't arrest you, It's just a scam.

Your choices for action here are limited, but do this

Unfortunately, you cannot take legal action against these people because they are ouside the United States, so they are out of the jurisdiction of any law enforcement agency here.

However, if you really want to waste your time and money, you first need to file a police report on the incident, and then have the authorities put a tap on your phone line and a trace to identify the caller.

Most likely though, they are using a VOIP connection and a "spoofed" number which are in most case untraceable if overseaes as we cannot get warrants for the IP info.

The best thing to do is file an FTC complaint online with as much info as you can provide, so documentation will be available in the future for others and possibly a case later on.

Keep a whistle handy and answer the call next time, and when the jerk started rambling with his broken English, just sharply blow the whistle in his ear and get some satisfaction! You can then picture some loser in your mind slumped over in a cubicle with blood running out of his headset where his eardrums used to be. Priceless!

Have fun with these morons!
