Ontario Energy Savings Program is a complete SCAM!

My mother, who speaks enough English to communicate but not perfect enough to ask questions and understand law language of company contacts signed up with this company back in March of 2006. These people kept coming to our door week after week and my mother decided to sign up, thinking that they were from the government and were trying to save us money on our hydro and electricity bill by locking it at a flat rate, because she was informed and almost scared into thinking that the rates would increase at a rapid rate in the upcoming months/years, she agreed.

However, this information was FALSE and finally I found out that we have been paying almost double the rate of kilowatts for energy used. (something around 5 cents compared 9.8 cents the company was offering) This was never mentioned at the time of the signing.

2 years later, we had another "agent" show up at our door to the same thing. Us, believing it was the same company, followed the same procedure and signed another "contract". This, now I find out was another company at the name of Universal Power (1866 900 2373).

Today (Nov 18, 2008) I received a letter from a collections company representing Ontario Savings Energy, informing us that we owed them $293.76 and this "outstanding account" would ultimately affect our credit rating (My DAD's, since the hydro and electricity are both under his name), immediate legal action and escalated collection activity action would be taken against us if we did not pay the balance in 7 days.

I called the collections company and spoke to a man who informed me of this, and agreed how absolutely ridiculous it was. These people, cancelled our "contract" without any valid notice because we had unknowingly signed up with another company.

I called Ontario Energy Savings and gave them a piece of my mind. This however does not change the fact that nearly $300 will come out of our pocket for a ridiculous scam that we were forced into believing. They told me to cancel with the other company and sign with them once again and the penatly fee would be cancelled.

Now the dilemma is we "owe" this company all this money for nothing, when they overcharged us nearly the double rate of what we should be paying for our hydro and electricity bills for 2 whole years. This new company, who is undoubtedly also over charging us also has a penalty fee to cancel. So it's a LOSE-LOSE situation.

I am absolutely frustrated with the fact that we were taking advantage of. We are a family of 5, who is now paying double the rates for the hydro and electricity that we use, and let me tell you, it's a LOT.

If this company is so legal, then why would they so willingly accept a signature from someone whose name isn't even on the hydro/electricity bill? Why would they cancel our so-called energy saving plan without any notice and then charge us loads of money that takes my family days to earn.

I notice that I am not the first to make a complaint about these scammers, and if anyone would like to take a group legal action against them, I am all for it.

Hi, my name is Christina, I received a notice from the bond street collection agency it was in regards to an account with ontario energy savings corp they said I have a client account with them They are claiming that this notice that i received on January 12th 2009 is the final notice and that they are acting on behalf of ontario energy savings corp and that i need to pay $736.35 and failure to pay will impact my credit rating. we never signed up with them and this notice is in mine and my brothers name. About 3 years ago when I was living in a house these people came to our property while my brother and i were cleaning out the garage, they said they were with ontario hydro in Oakville and they were there to inform us that the rates for hydro and gas were going up and they wanted to see our last bills received to see how high they were sitting at. We got the bills and showed it to them and they said with what we were paying we could be entitled to a small refund of $75.00 fro each bill in the length of time we were living there and needed the bills to take to their supervisor and that if entitled to the refund we would receive the bills back with a check. We had informed them that we were moving and it didn't really matter because we weren't going to be living there anymore and they presisted to say that we would get the refund for past months. we never signed a contract, these people took off with our bills and we did receive them back with no refund so we just assumed we were not entitled to one, since then we have heard nothing from these people until now asking us to pay for something that we never used or signed up for. I am very upset because they said it will affect our credit rating and i am planning to move in July and need my credit rating to stay in good standing order. Please help because I only have until the 17th of July to pay these people with money I don't even have before they mess up my credit rating. This notice states: January 7, 2009 Re: ONTARIO ENERGY SAVING CORP Client account No: xx69 Amount: $736.35 FINAL NOTICE-FURTHER ACTION TO COMMENCE IMMEDIATELY! Bond street collections is the authorized collection agency acting on behalf of our client ONTARIO ENERGY SAVINGS CORP. Your account has been assigned to us with the expectation that we collect the balance in full. Despite previous correspondence sent from out office, you have failed to pay your account. This is your final notice! PLEASE FORWARD PAYMENT IN FULL TO OUR OFFICE TODAY! Unless payment in full is received within ten days from the date of this letter, we will be proceeding with ESCALATED COLLECTION ACTIVITY. Having an account listed with the Credit Bureau will negatively impact your credit standing. You may be declined for credit or financing in the future. AVOID FURTHER ACTION - PAY THIS ACCOUNT TODAY! Your immediate attention to this matter will save you considerable TIME, EXPENSE & EMBARASSMENT, so please take this final opportunity to resolve this matter amicably before further action is required. Govern Yourself Accordingly, Mr. Armando 905-866-9422 ext.100 I would like for this not to affect everything i have worked so hard for, I have never received any type of notices prior to this one and i am scared of what these people are going to do.
