The information provided in this report below is based on comments made by Cole Rucker during an onsite inspection held by a third party verification company with no biases toward Paradigm Malibu.
Paradigm Malibu is a rehabilitation facility that specializes in the treatment of teenagers, "Our focus is to provide mental health and chemical dependency treatment for adolescents. We are very much about internalized rather than external motivators. For us, the goal is about helping young people find value and approaching their lives differently and getting different results.”
Their client base is mainly developed through referrals, "My business partner, Dr. Nalin and I have been doing this for many years. As a result, private therapists, teachers, attorneys, and alumni tend to be our biggest referral base." When asked about the typical experience for a patient of Paradigm Malibu, Mr. Rucker explained, "We're a small program that is very much about catering the experience to the individual. So what people can anticipate right up front is a lot of energy being put into determining not just what we are treating, but discovering which treatment modalities will have the biggest impact for that individual. Then we will create a treatment plan based on that, making it a very collaborative process.”
PARADIGM MALIBU CUSTOMER CARE & COMPLAINT RESOLUTION
During the onsite interview, Mr. Rucker was asked to describe a situation where a patient was not satisfied with the level of service they received. Mr. Rucker explained that he was unaware of any dissatisfaction. "If somebody felt like they weren’t getting what they needed, we are small enough and agile enough that we can change our approach to make sure that their needs are being met. If we don’t have the capacity to meet someone's needs, were going to help them find a program that can. Our communication with not just the user, but with the parents, throughout the whole process is ongoing. To my knowledge, we’ve never had a family leave this program dissatisfied or feeling like they weren’t taken care of," explained Mr. Rucker.
Because of their unique management style, Mr. Rucker states that Paradigm Malibu has never had an unresolved complaint. He was asked to describe in further detail how complaints are dealt with, "I want to make sure I am being as transparent as possible. We’ve never had an unresolved complaint. That doesn’t mean that parents don’t say to us that they may prefer certain things be done differently, but we address that in the moment and adjust accordingly. We then follow up to make sure we met their expectations. One of the things we do throughout the process is to allow the families to evaluate how things are going. They help steer the ship.”
When asked to comment on the complaints posted on Ripoff Report's website, Mr. Rucker believes that the comments were made by a past employee, "The statements are patently false. The reason I can say that is because the things described have never transpired. We believe we know the source. It is my belief that it was written by a former employee we had to discharge. The language and nature of the complaint was consistent with that individual." Although Mr. Rucker believes that the comments are false he did go on to address them, as well as describe Paradigm Malibu's accreditations. "There is no difference because families who come to us pay for services. If insurance reimbursement is something that is an issue for the families, it doesn’t really weigh on us in terms of our ability to provide services. So everyone receives the same quality of treatments. We are accredited by the Joint Commission JCAHO which is the highest level accreditation a residential treatment program can have. The standards are very high and we sought out that accreditation -- we wanted families to know that they were going to be able to get the highest quality of care."
Ripoff Report’s on site visit, interviews and policy reviews with Paradigm Malibu have resulted in their being verified as a safe business. This confirms that prospective clients can proceed with confidence, knowing that Paradigm Malibu will do all that they can to satisfy their clients, and that they will take extra steps to resolve any issues that may arise. Paradigm Malibu has a number of systems in place to solicit client feedback and create corrective action plans when appropriate.
Paradigm Malibu co-founder, Dr. Jeff Nalin, has a stellar record that assures us of his commitment to the well being and satisfaction of all of his patients. He is not only a successful businessman, but also a licensed clinical psychologist. As such, Dr. Nalin has a proven history of advocating for his client's need and best interests. He is in good standing with the American Psychological Association as well as other numerous professional organizations including but not limited to being a diplomate of the National Institute of Sports Professionals and an adjunct faculty member at Pepperdine University. Further, Dr. Nalin and his team sought out and secured accreditation by the Joint Commission - the gold standard in mental health, behavioral health and chemical dependency treatment. Doing so, he has voluntarily subjected himself and Paradigm to rigorous audits and evaluations related to quality client care.
Jeremy Manne, Program Coordinator, told us that the program’s priorities have always been state of the art client care. "When I first joined the Paradigm team, I often times made suggestions based on my experience working at other treatment programs. When the suggestions were about cost savings at the expense of quality care, I was quickly redirected by the founders. They have taught me that if you make client satisfaction the centerpiece of every decision you make, everything else will follow.”
Diane Flinn, Director of Business Affairs states "I've worked at many adolescent treatment programs over the years. I've never been a part of any organization that cared more about their client satisfaction. Clients always come first and everything else is a distant second. I'm really proud to be a part of an organization that has the right priorities. It's an honor to be a part of such an amazing program.”
PARADIGM MALIBU / STATEMENTS FROM THE OWNER
"I have been working with adolescents and their families for almost thirty years. Every family and every program that I have been fortunate enough to serve has taught me something. I bring that life time of learning to my position as a co-founder of Paradigm Malibu. The treatment approach we use at our program reflects the accumulation of knowledge and skills from some of the most respected practitioners in the field." Cole Rucker, Co-Founder.
Paradigm Malibu is pleased to be a part of Ripoff Report’s Corporate Advocacy Business Remediation and Customer Satisfaction Program. Mr. Rucker further explains by stating, "The stakes in our field are very high. We are not selling widgets, we are talking about people’s lives. I think it’s really important for families to have services like Ripoff Report to be able to investigate where they’re going, to know that they’re sending their child someplace that is not just safe, but effective. Paradigm Malibu is a facility where they will get quality care and emerge with the tools to be able to change the trajectory of their lives. So I am glad that Ripoff Report is there to hold people accountable. I appreciate this process where we're able to work together to just get the facts on the table and figure out how to get those facts to consumers.”
PARADIGM MALIBU’S CORE BELIEFS
I am still trying to figure out what happened.
We called many places to find the "right" fit for our child. Paradigm Malibu promised the world and fell far short of what they said. I should have known that they were not on the up and up when they were so busy slamming other places (that I hadn't even asked about) and saying how they dont do things like other places as opposed to what they do.
The kids seem to work the system (and were really not required to do much at all) and there was a lot of interactions between the kids that didnt seem right. When I spoke to the staff about it, they told me to essentially "mind my own business".
They kept trying to keep my son but didnt seem to have good reasons why. Some people are on insurance and scooted out rather quickly, while we, who paid for it on our own, kept being told he had to stay.
Do your research, after we left I found out that they used to have another program under a different name that was known for not taking good care of kids and there was even a suicide attempt at the facility because they didnt have enough staff. They sold the company for a bunch of money and it seems like they are just trying to do that again.
We ended up putting our son in an out of state program and he is doing well, it also has its pluses and minuses, but they at least seem to care.
