Park West Gallery - Park West At Sea ripoff dishonest cruise art auction Southfield Michigan

I went to my first time fine art auction while I was aboard Carnival Triumph cruise line from June 27 to July 3. I was told by the auctioneer the auction price on the ship is at 40 to 80 percent below land auction value. The only chance I can get this kind of price is on the ship, it is a great bargain for any investment. etc. I was completely convinced the most affordable way to purchase art work as an investment is on the ship from the biggest art gallery in US - Parkwest Gallery. Thinking there is no way the biggest art gallery wants to risk its reputation for deceptive and indusive saling. So I spent a hugh amount on some big name art work as my investment.

when I got back home, I quickly did a search on the art work I bought from Park west. What shocked me is that I found out Rembrandt's The Raising of Lazarus I paid more than $4100 for at cruise auction is listed for $3300 (this is all I would pay to get the famed painting delivered to my house) from Jean Stephen Galleries. I also found Peter Max's work originally from Park west gallery listed on EBay for a lot less as well. yet I was told what I paid for is already 40 to 80 percent below its vaule. I am very upset and feel Parkwest purposely lied to me just to make me to open my wallet and it does not care for anything else.

I don't have problem to pay more for anything I contract to buy if I was not induced to buy. I DO have big problem with the fact art auctioneer told me what I am getting is a great bargain, only available on the ship. Yet, as it turned out, not only it is not truth, but also you realized somebody purposely induced you to buy his product. I have big problem with this deceptive practice. I am sure everyone would have problem with this deceptive practice.

I immmediately contacted park west gallery to cancel some of my purchases. I was thinking, as a common practice, I should be able to do so since I will not receive any art work untill 7 weeks later anyway. Guess what? To my surprise, I was told that once I signed the contract on the ship, everything is final. Cancellation is not permitted. No wonder they do not allow any cancellations, because their intention is to rip you off while you are isolated onboard a ship in the middle of nowhere.

I have determined to fight for the right settlement in behalf of all consumers. This deceptive practice get to be stopped!! Want to sell art work on ships? Fine! BUT DON'T INDUCE PEOPLE TO BUY!!

#2Consumer Suggestion

Thu, July 29, 2004

I am pleased to let everyone know that Parkwest Gallery has responded to my report and we have reached a settlement to my satisfaction.

I can honest tell you, as the biggest art gallery in the world, Parkwest does value his customers and try to solve any concerns and issues raised by them in a very professional manner. I am very pleased to have a good conversation with Bill Smith-parkwest's senior auctioneer and have learned a lot from him. than you, Bill.

However, I did give Bill some suggestions about cruise auction and their customer services in order to reduce these kind of complaints in the future.

Anyway, the bottom line is Parkwest has no intention to rip-off their customers. they are a good company to do business with.
