I first learned about Primerica through an email I received after posting my resume on Monster.com. The email came from a woman who stated that I had qualities that they were looking for and to check out the Citigroup website. She asked me to call to set up a meeting time.

Well the first thing that keyed me off was that I would be going to a "meeting" at about 7 pm on a Thursday night. I had no idea what the meeting would be about and even though I had heard of Citigroup, I still had no idea what Primerica was (if you listen closely you'll pick up that they always start out advertising themselves as a branch or division of Citigroup).

I dressed up, went to the meeting and sat through a fairly glossy presentation. Though most people on this website state that Primerica usually has shabby offices, this one was okay. The presentation consisted of a 30 minute video showcasing people who had made a bunch of money and it was followed by a man who claimed to make $45K a month. After he spoke, a man who had left a career as a veterinarian took the stage. At this point things really looked too good to be true and as naive as I was, I could see myself being successful like they were.

They explained how they give our free financial analyses to people and that they base everything on referrals. They promised that the financial statements they provided would sell themselves and that you had to do a certain number of them every month. They also added that people needed to attend classes and pay money for their certification.

I almost fell for this plan. My husband was the one who told me it was too good to be true and the more I saw of Primerica, the more I realized he was correct.

I have nothing against MLM's--I just dislike how people in them get the audience into a frenzied enthusiasm and they make everyone think they will be working 20 hour weeks and making millions within 5-10 years. Given the numbers of people recruited, that is simply impossible. It has nothing to do with the fact that "people are unmotivated" (a common defense of MLMers) or that people quit. Given the amount of people in the world, there has to be a point where you can not recruit 3 more people and add them to the "downline".

Anyway, I have learned my lesson (thankfully before any money was wasted). I have a friend whose husband spent $100 (and did not get it back) before he figured out something was not right. Also, I recently attended a job fair where a Primerica rep was cruising the fair to pick up jobseekers. In my opinion, this was as low as someone could possibly get. He did not have a booth set up, but instead he used the fair to find easy prey to suck into his scheme. He did take my resume and when he said he worked for "a division of Citigroup" I knew exactly what he meant. Anyway, I just wanted to add my experience to the long list of complaints against Primerica.
