I was trying to track down a friend of my wife. Using available (and free) data bases, I had addresses for her. Then I hit a dead end. I tried using the on-line White Pages but was sent to a company called Intellius.

For what seemed to be a modest sum, they provided me a report with some addresses and a phone number. The last address and phone number were totally bogus so I decided never to use the service again.

Two weeks later, I contacted my bank over a minor problem with my credit card and, on a serendipitous whim, reviewed recent charges. There was a mysterious charge of $14.95 for "AP-9". This was for an 'idendity protection service' from an outfit that called itself "Privacy Matters".

Getting ripped off by a company that allegedly 'protects identity' does seem to fall into the area of chutzpah.
