Public Storage They ruined all of my belongings that were moved and stored in their wharehourses. Everything was mildewed and melted. They lied, cheated me and they were nasty consumer rip-off fraud Pompano Beach FloridaPompano Beach Florida .....

I used Public storage to move and store my furniture and clothing. They told me my things would be in climate controlled safe environment.

For starters the personnel in Pompano Beach, Florida facility were abusive, nasty and prevented me from getting to my belongings once they were stored. I was overcharged and never sent bills or invoices for charging.

They charged me late fees and i was never sent a bill for services. When I went to the facility they told me they would investigate my problem and get back to me. They never did. When I complained, they said I never asked.

When I finally got my things out of storage everything smelled and had mildew. My furniture was ruined, all my clothing smelled very bad and there were roaches and vermin in my boxes. My furniture was discolored and a plastic frame had melted.

I called the insurance company ( I paid extra for insurance) and they sent out a claims examiner. He took pictures and said I would be compensated for my damages. He admitted to the mildew and said i should count all the clothing and get receipts before I was paid for damages.

After i got bills and estimates, which took a few months, they told me my case had been closed. When i tried to reach the examiner, I was told by him that he no longer worked at the company. When I tried to get a copy of the damage report, which i never received, I was told i couldn't have it. They tried to settle with me for $700, when I lost over $4,500.00 in damages. Everything i had in storage is ruined. I spent over $5000 in moving and storage for nothing.

Also, all my electronic goods don't work now. My VCR and my CD player are not working due to heat and all the elastic in my clothing had melted. The insurance company said they are NOT responsible because of "atmospheric changes" to my containers.

I noticed that none of my paperwork has the address or phone number of the home office in California. When I called to complain months ago I was told that the personnel in Pompano Beach said i was abusive. This is one very dishonest unsavory company that is selling stock on the NYStock exchange. They use deceptive business practices and have a bad record with the Florida Better Business Bureau.

#2Consumer Suggestion

Sun, February 15, 2004

I just rented a storage space with Public Storage (Coral Springs, FL) today and have rented from this particular place about 5 years or so in the past. When I rented in the past, I never had a problem with PS. I walked-in my rent payment on-time or early each month so there was no chance for delay, lost payment, shenanigans, etc. Today when I walked in to rent the space, I was told about the $1 first month deal, which I had no idea about, was shown two sizes of spaces (I chose the larger because of what I believe I will need), and had all the charges and policies clearly explained to me. I have everything in writing, including a certificate of insurance from their insurance company (will list the details below for any who may need it), and was required to initial by each policy after having it verbally explained to me as well as having read it myself. As for your belongings being mildewed and melted, you should have realized that in Florida, the humidity levels are often very high, and it does tend to rain a lot. The temperatures can be very high, especially in a closed environment. If you were concerned about water damage, you should have put some 2x4s on the ground to keep your stuff off the floor. Insects are a continual problem in Florida, and no one can be totally responsible for their appearance. There's only so much one can do to prevent them or keep them away. Anyone who has lived in Florida knows this. In short, you should understand what you are signing before signing it. If you were unsure about anything, you should ask. If you didn't get anything in writing, you should have. Shame on them for not giving it to you (if they did not), but also shame on you for not asking. The responsibility is shared. I cannot speak to your insurance issues because I don't know the details (2 sides to each story). In short, be responsible and understand EVERYTHING from policies to environment before you sign (or initial) on the line(s). Public Storage-provided Insurance Carrier: Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.
