I purchased a used 2000 Celica GT-S with a oil leak and an agreement for them to fix the leak as a condition of the sale on May 20th. On the evening of Monday June 14th I brought them the car for the oil repair. I picked up the car Thursday morning Jun 17th. They had replaced the cam sensor.

I drove the car apx 10 miles to work, and upon leaving work that evening the battery light came on. I asked a mechanic I knew to look at it and he pointed out that the battery hold down was loose, and the cap to prevent the positive terminal from touching was pushed down between the battery box and the engine. As I had been putting oil into to every other day, I am quite certain that it was not that way before putting the car in for service. The mechanic said the problem was that the battery had touched the hood of the car, and caused a short, and that he had seen that before. I brought it back to Ray Brandt, and the salesman Alex arranged for me to take a loaner for the evening.

The next day Paul called and said the problem was with the alternator itself, and I had replaced the battery. I had not. The same battery I bought it with is still in there. The repair was to be $530+ to replace the alternator. Since I called Toyota (national) they want to give me a discount but won't say how much. They are also now claiming not to know how much it's going to cost to repair even though I had a verbal estimate from Paul before...

Lying to the BBB in their response

I filed with the BBB - yes I know it's pretty much useless. But if it causes them even a little pain it's worth it. In their response, they are claiming... 1) I changed the battery. I haven't, and have told 3 people there that. Paul the service manager claimed that they won't sell a car with a WalMart battery. Well they did... 2) I drove the car for days between the 2 service dates. Strange, it went in the evening of the 6/14/04. They called me on the afternoon of the 16th. I picked up on the morning of the 17th. Drove it to work. Went to leave and had the problem. They gave me a loaner on that same day. And it was somehow waiting for them at 7am on the 18th when then got there. But somehow, 7am to 7pm = several days. 3) My story changed from talking to Toyota and to the BBB. Unfortunately for them, the BBB sent me a copy of the complaint as Toyota sent it to them. I've gone through it line by line in my response. There is no inaccuracy there. Some details were left out. To be expected I would think since it was a story that was told to them over the phone and they were summarizing. Most of it is "customer states bought car on (date). Had oil leak. Dlr agreed to fix." But there's not 1 line that goes against what was filed with either the BBB or Louisiana AG's office.
