Linda, I also bought a patio set from Rec Warehouse, Greensboro, back in 2007. The sales people there at the time were very nice, they did tell me that it would weather over time, and the only way to preserve that is to use a teak oil. They didnt say what brand or anything, just that if I were to add this, it will help preserve the color of the wood.
Now with all that being said, your time line from what I was reading confused me alittle. You said you bought this set a year ago, and when you asked the salesperson how to take care of it, he said, "a clear perservative." but then you immedately followed it up with, "I did a week later it looked like crap and started to peel." Teak isnt a hard material or keep maintained, You sand, you stain, you let it leech, and then your pretty much done. If your telling me that you bought it a year ago, and NO just started to apply the perservative, then I can understand why it looks bad. But if you got it a year ago and then a 'week' later you added it, and then it started having issues, I would wonder what 'clear perservative' you used on it, and if it was the right one to begin with. If Rec Warehouse didnt have a Teak oil in stock or something, I could understand, but from what it sounds like it sounds like you just got a clear preservative and put it on top of it, which didnt get rid of the 'dying' wood. I would have called Rec before going though any process.
An example to that would be replacing tired on a car, we all know that tires are needed, but without knowing the steps to take and which type of tire to get the job can be done wrong. But I wouldnt just try to go out there and do the job without knowing the correct way to do it.
As I said before I have a Sumbawa set from Rec Warehouse of Greensboro, it's very heavy and takes alittle longer to Leech than other sets they had. But I did research on it and found the correct way to prolong the life of it.
I feel your pain Linda, from a person to person, but as much as your blaming Rec Warehouse for not telling you, the lack of knowing exactly what to get seems to fall in your half of the problems.
You can hate me for the points I have made, but I am being as fair as I can be.
Good luck in the future,
Keith
