My telephone company is Embarq (formally Sprint) On 9-1-06 I noticed an additional charge on my bill from a billing company called ESBI. The $14.95 plus tax charge was on behalf of ROCTEL Corp. Since I never requested or subscribed to Privacy Plus Voice Mail, I called EMBARG to complain. They placed a 30 day hold on my account for these fraudulent charges. I then was advised to call ESBI at 1 888 300-3724. I spoke to a woman named Grace and she cancelled the charge. She also advised me that my daughter requested the service, a claim which my daughter denies since she has her own cell phone. She is also 22 years old. She never uses the landline, so why would she want Privacy Plus Voicemail?

Later on that evening at 5:40 PM, I received a phone call from Consumer Digital, which came up on my caller ID. Their phone number is (201)429-1100. This "gentleman" tried to harass me about my cancellation of the Privacy Plus Voice Mail service. I threatened him with an attorney (my brother) and hung up on him.

I think that this practice of billing customers for unwanted services is connected somehow with web browsing and cookies. I never received a phone solitcitation from ROCTEL Corp. I am also willing to join any class action suit against them.

I have reported ROCTEL Corp. to the Federal Trade Comission and advised EMBARG about the harassing phone call.
