I saw an annoucement on T.V. for Seniors to sign up for Gas at a discounted price. When I signed up the price was a very low price monthly. When I was transferred over to their Company Scana Enegery, the price went up to 0.97 from 0.28. I was sent a bill for $480.oo in December, but the weather was not cold enough in Atlanta, GA. for that high bill. When I contacted them in October asking why the bill was $150.00 I was told I used that amount of gas and the Atlanta Gas Co. read the meter and it was that amount used. I stated I had not used the amount because my gas furnance was off and only Hot Water Tank was being used. All winter my Furnance was not working. I used Electric Heaters to keep warm. When I told them no one had been out to read the meter I was told they use a scanner to read the meter. I went out to look at the meter to see how it was scanned and found a white box attached to the meter.

I went back to the phone and stated there was a box on the meter and was told it was not theirs (Scana) but maybe it was Atlanta Gas light co. I called the Atlanta Gas Co. and was told it was not theirs either. Within a week the box disapeared. I refused to pay for a bill I know I do not owe. No one wants to admit there is a hookup on the meters to keep the meter running when it is off. I had the entire gas turned off because of the leak from the heater and the meter was still moving. Finally when i called and said I smelled gas someone came out and stated the gas was still on, when the gas company said they turned the gas two months before. The Atlanta Gas Co. is falsely charging and I believe Scana is a part of the scam.

OK, Babra (Barbara?)  Here is the deal with the "box."  There is probably a "box" on your meter.  Many years ago, Atlanta Gas Light went to "remote reading."  What this means is that they can read you meter without coming to your house.  There is a mini van that travels through neighborhoods that has radio transmitting and recieving equipment in it.  It can get several hundred feet from your meter and read it without ever coming on your property.  It is very unlikely you will ever see the mini van and if you did, you'd probably not recognize it for what it is.  It's very plain jane.

Now to the difference in the advertised price and the billed price:  You need to contact The Georgia Public Service Commission about this.  I'm quite certain they will take your information seriously.  The GPSC is the regulatory dept. that controls the utilities in the state and they virtually have the power of God as it applies to public utilities.  An investigation by the GPSC will make them sit up and listen as well as quickly address any problems that have been reported.  They very much want to stay in the good graces of the GPSC as they set the prices they can charge for their natural gas product.  The GPSC can also set regulations they have to abide by.  If the GPSC gets the idea that they are ripping the citizens off, they can make it a very bumpy road for them.

The commissioners of the GPSC are just ordinary citizens like you and me and they are understanding.  In the past, they have made it tough for utilities to get rate increases so the utilities sit up and listen when the GPSC speaks.  But, we as citizens must speak to the GPSC so they know what is going on.
