Employed by Sharkey Transportation aka Shippers Rental for 8 months this year.  I took the job because their recruiter promised sign on bonus, home time (out 5-7 days home 2 days) percentage pay per load, insurance coverage, bonus pay, 50,000 plus a year or more.

Sign-on bonus, as promised was received over an unbearable 8 month period.  I paid a hefty price for this sign on bonus.  There was no home time.  Alot of time was at truck stops or at one of their terminals waiting to hear about a load that never came in a timely manner.  Percentage pay of no loads is nothing.  Eight months and I only grossed $22,000.00.  Insurance coverage was there but they did not pay any of our doctor visits.  Bonus pay was turned down every 10 weeks because of reasons their safety person would not explain (Hours of service).  Sharkey dictates when you move the truck and when not.  Tolls were not allowed or covered, but they expected you to drive over hours and wait at food warehouses overhours for truck loads with no rest.

There was no home time.  Home Friday night and leave Sunday morning early once a month.  This situation is occurring at several different trucking companies involving several deceptive company recruiters.  I have another job now and the same situation is happening all over again to me.

I am a seasoned driver 15 plus years with no accidents and excellent credentials.  As I see it, companies get away with the lies because they can hide behind recruiters who are disquised as company representatives on the internet.  Someone should be accountable.

Once I quit Sharkey I took the truck back to Quincy, Il , 300 miles and took a train home (which I paid for) and parked it in their yard.  I quit finally because I had requested to come home as I was very sick and wanted to see my physician.  They got angry said no, would not get me to a doctor and then took 300 dollars out of my check for the 300 miles I traveled to return their truck to them.  I had sat in the truck stop without a load for 2 days  with a high fever and they refused to move me (sick mind you) anywhere.

I got off the train after 6 days of being/complaining about being sick to dispatch and my wife took me to emergency immediately.  I had a severe case of dehydration and the flu.

Follow the link and see how well Sharkey does with the Safe Stat numbers. It looks to me like they are outdated on filing with Federal reports. The Safe Stat site says VMT report is outdated. So how great is the safety team at Sharkey? They are clueless and Jack doesn't care about any of the employees he is out for himself. I am glad to see that he has time to set up accounts to rebut any item that is said about him and his company. If you're looking for a company to go broke with Sharkey is your new home. Sign your life away and lose it all.

As a former employee of this company, I can say that when I read this post, I was just shaking my head.

First off, the sign on bonus is payed out over a 3 month period not 8 ( I did the guarantee pay when it was 1000 a week). Yes, it can be grueling at times during your first six months of employment; but there is not a company out there that stacks freight like Sharkey. You were most likely the problem.

Sharkey offers mileage pay (@.35 cpm), guarantee pay (it was .40 cpm when I left in September) and percentage (23-25% depending on how much experience you have). You were offered a choice of pay plan in orientation; if you chose percentage, it is on you.

Second,

The safety department is one of the best I have had the pleasure of working with. They stay on the ball and that is the way a safety department is supposed to function. Their Safe-Stat score is one of the lowest in the industry.

Third,

I was ALWAYS reinbursed for tolls and other expenses. Sharkey has Pre-Pass and it doubles as an EZ-Pass. There are TWO routes that are not covered (I88 in Illinois and I80/94 in Indiana). What is required is that you obtain permission from your FM when running a toll route to get authorization... what is the problem with that?

Fourth,

Freight has been a problem for the last year FOR EVERYONE. I left the company at the end of Sept 2009 because I wanted to be able to go to Cali more and spend time with my family. I would still be there if it were not for this. If you made lousy money, it is because of you refusing freight, being at home too much or just bitching at your FM.

I had my share of sit time (and I certainly don't like it, ask my old fm Dennis), but I kept my mouth shut and didn't chastise the fleet manager or the planner and as a result, they took care of me. Remember, when you don't run, Sharkey doesn't get revenue on the truck... they want to make money just as much as you do.

Finally,

You write of how you got charged money for bringing the truck back... You were told up front that you needed to finish your load and then be routed back to the Quincy Terminal (I know this because that is what they told me). The FM's there are professional and competant. If you got a raw deal it is because of your attitude. I find it very hard to believe that you were refused medical treatment and all in all, your experience at Sharkey was a result of your performance. Everyone has a job to do. They do theirs and we, as drivers, are supposed to adapt to ever-changing conditions.

You certainly didn't do yourself any favors by writing complaints about the company for whom you last worked... believe me; they know who wrote it.

I hope your next employer will be more "user friendly".
