I blame myself for not understanding and reading the small print of S & J Engines warranty or should I say S & S Engines because same company, same games, same complaints over and over.

I was drawn to the 7 year warranty.  I should have known if it looks too good to be true then it probably is.  The warranty does not cover most of the engine and they will come up with every excuse to deny your claim.  

There are 2 pieces of information that I should have read closely in their terms and conditions. First they max out their labor payment at $850.  (which they will never pay because they will find an excuse to blame your certified installer) Second their 7 year warranty ONLY COVERS THE SHORT BLOCK "Labor reimbursement will (NOT) be paid for an engine removal unless a defect caused during manufacturing is present in the short block".  S&J Engines Warranty Read for yourself.

I found out afterwards that the short block is just the engine block itself and does not include the cylinderheads or timing components or anything else that comes on a long block which is what you are buying!

Very shady company who wont stand behind their product! IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE THEN IT IS! DO NOT BUY OR YOU WILL BE SORRY!

HAVING READ SOME REPORTS HERE, I TOTALLY DISAGREE WITH "RIP OFF" CLAIMS. I'VE BEEN IN  AUTO REPAIR FOR 45 YEARS, KNOW ALL THE CREW AT S AND J ENGINES, AND THEY DO GREAT MACHINE WORK. PERIOD. I AM VERY FUSSY ABOUT CYLINDER FINISH AND CRANKSHAFTS, THESE GUYS DO GREAT WORK. PERIOD. I AM AN AUTO RACER BOTH DRAG AND OVAL TRACK, THEY DO LOTS OF MY MACHINE WORK. I HAVE ALSO INSTALLED OVER A HUNDRED OF THEIR LONG BLOCKS AND SHORT BLOCKS. NONE HAVE FAILED. PERIOD.

Obviously, any business will have interactions which do not please customers.  This is reality.  Equally obviously, warranty simply cannot cover every eventuality.  Sometimes the failure IS caused by something other than a failure of the work performed. 

It is entirely reasonable for S&J to investigate the cause of any warranty-claimed failure, and to limit the labor.  As both a retail consumer (I buy their services for all my own cars) and a shop that installs S&J's engines in my customers' cars, I compare their warranty to what is offered by competitors.  I have had opportunities to file warranty claims, and have never once felt that S&J did not perform above and beyond the stated terms of the warranty they offer.

I have always approached warranty claims professionally, and find that honest discussions with adequate documentation usually gets me taken care of very well.  S&J has offered free or reduced-price service regarding failures, even when the failure was no fault of S&J.  Most recently, A customer failed to install the oil-pump drive on a Ford 370 truck engine, which, of course, did damage by the time the error was identified.  S&J re-overhauled the engine back to their warranty-able condition, charged only for parts, and issued a new warranty certificate.  (They also asked that the next install be inspected by another mechanic prior to start-up...)

S&J is a business, and they make sound business decisions.  The adage is true: You can't please all of the people, all of the time.  But S&J is as good at pleasing most people, most of the time, as anyone I know.
