This is similar to what they write in their ads on craigslist almost every week, though with some variations to make up for their lack of hiring almost anyone.

I knew about the Kirby vacuum company before hand.....in fact I first found out about them through other ads in the same area.....there's an article written about one on rip report already called J&J Sales and Marketing promising a $2,400 a month salary in Sunnyvale. This company is similar, except that they offer a $2,000 salary. These are big promises but before you go about believing them check, out the many scam reports all over the internet and this website. SJU INC is just another cover-up name to what they really are, a Kirby affiliated and associated product line. If you are so unfortunate enough to get lulled into getting this job, you will soon find yourself working long hours without getting even 10% of the payment that they supposedly guarantee.

So how did I find out that SJU INC. are a bunch of lying scammers? Well like I said before I was very suspicious by them.....but after going for a long time without a job I was highly tempted by the possibility that they weren't just lying about a mighty good salary and the like. After all, we are facing an economic crisis and finding a full time job, or at least a job that pays the salary of a full timer working extra hours was just too good to give up.

So I gave them a call......I had a plan to ask them whether they were affiliated with Kirby, but every time I forgot to.....if I did it would have saved a lot of time. Anyways even during the call I started to get suspicious.....he did pick up and say "SJU" but he did not professionally state who he was and his position.....the first sign that this place ain't professional. I continued to ask a barrage of questions....more notably how am I guaranteed the $2,000 at the end of the month.

He responded after quite a long pause "I don't know, after the paperworks and contract is signed." Notice how he shows a level of doubt as if he was unsure what he was talking about....it certainly sounded that way over the phone as well. I even told him some of my concerns how this ad is posted every week or so and how I suspect it could be a fraud business.....the man on the other end said nothing. Doesn't sound like he cares that I had concern, probably because he knew he couldn't directly lie, and Kirby is known for indirect trickery.

Not once did he ask me whether I am legally able to work in the US which is what many contract jobs do before scheduling an interview. I eventually decided not to go through with it....but since I needed a job and hey maybe he was just fumbling words over the phone.....I decided to call him a few days later. Apparently though.....no one picked up....it seems like the business is not active on the latter part of the week which further makes this strange especially if they claim this is a full time business.

So I waited till Monday to try calling again....this time someone picked up.....the same man who talked to me before on the phone.....and he claimed his name was Corey. We set up an interview and I went to it in a remotely located complex in Northern San Jose. When I went in and greeted the man in the front desk....apparently this was the same man I talked to over the phone but it was very obvious the voice sounded different. My suspicions further were raised but after he gave me a rather light application to fill out I decided to do so....afterwards I gave the application to the front desk and no sooner later I was escorted to the room where the interview would be taking place.

Now before I even entered the room I noticed plaques and what seemed to be like awards on the walls stating "Kirby" and "Kirby Vacuum". At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks with me since I was worried that this would be a Kirby business but after I went in the room before the man interviewed me....I looked again and clearly saw the "Kirby" written on it. I was thinking in my head.....oh d**n.....I can't believe I'm about to be interviewed for a job with Kirby. He eventually did reveal that the company is indeed heavily in league with the Kirby vacuum company and that this was basically an extension of it.

The job consisted of going to scheduled appointments to demonstrate their products. I was told there would be no door to door but this is what Kirby does....they mislead the potential employee into thinking that all appointments will be scheduled when in fact often times the appointment is of with a person who knows nothing of the appointment, essentially making it a planned door to door operation. He eventually gave me his card....and told me to call between 4:00 and 4:45 PM. He told me I would most likely be hired and not once did he mention the application and how I was going to start right away with no "necessary paperwork". All the while claiming this was a contract job. Of course I decided not to call after finding out all that info! Despite not listening to what he said he called the next day inquiring about me and I wasn't home but I still never called him....it's so obvious how desperate these people are for employees since Kirby is known for a very bad employee turnout rate. Obviously that's the reason why they post every week.

I would be careful when dealing with similar ads and the like on craigslist or other job adverts. If they claim they will schedule an interview before filling out any applications or paper, or don't ask for a resume or similar info though the e-mail medium....chances are they aren't for real. It is suspicious enough if they post so often.....shows how little they get people to work for them.

I am a recently hired employee who has gone through a day of the "Orientation" and have yet to even see a W4 form. I can guarantee that I will not be keeping this job, and apologize to those that will remain here.

To begin "Corey" you are not a franchise of anyone, so get that clear. You did not buy any piece of the company....You are an "independent owned and operated business" you do not work for The Kirby Company at all!!!! and what the person said about the tactics is completely true. The ads on the papers and online are deceptives and are not clear at all. Yes you might have some dealers making money, but who is the real big pocket behind this?. You know and I know that the response the individual get after calling for the ad is a script with some basic questions in order to qualify the individual coming for an interview. Nothing is mentioned about Kirby on that first call, you and I know that. The person comes and fill out the application and you do not even look at it. The person is interviewed for three minutes if so, and it is given a phone number to call in the afternoon. You hand pick some of the people who doesn't ask too many questions and you "Congratulate" them. You and I know that. The person comes into the office for an orientation and start all the blah, blah, blah. So stop defending the fact that all of you are liers and live off people making you money....Kirby is the greatest product and it is a shame that loosers like you have the ability of buying them from the company...Scott Fetzer should pay more attention to who they allow to become distributors.... You want to respond? Go ahead.

My name is Corey Burke and I am the person sited above. Joshua was never an employee of our business and as so never attended any training or worked any days as such. This is an independent Kirby franchise and as such is able to do business in its own way and is not connected or affiliated with any other Kirby franchise. As he was never an employee of our company any information he has posted on this article is absolutely false everything we post on our help wanted adds is true and we have all our new hires go through a comprehensive orientation program where we educate them on ALL aspects of our business and they can then make a choice as to weather or not they would like to work for our company. We have many employees who work here that make much more than the $2000 base pay and who enjoy the work environment in our place of business.

The Hiring Tactics of desperate franchise owners

#12Consumer Comment

Tue, April 28, 2009

I too have responded to these ads and was employed by a franchisee of Kirby. First things first...Kirby, the company, good product. Franchises, are simply independent businesses that have purchased the rights to a copyrighted or patented item. That being said, a majority of the franchises seem to employ deceptive recruitment (not employment) tactics to get people in the door. I feel that such tactics have no place in sales, let alone in the HR dept of sales. I have been in direct sales for a few years, and have been employed in high pressure, face to face type of jobs, but the FRANCHISEES seem to employ some dirty tactics sometimes. Please don't assume all are unscrupulous, I have encountered "diamond in the rough" type of stories regarding this same subject. I have seem people make money selling Kirbys, and feel it is a solid product. I just wish Kirby would wake up to what their franchises do, and regulate it before these scams reflect negatively on the corporation itself. I agree, they're tricky operators, and it's not just in California. They got me in San Antonio and probably wasted what could have been very productive time for me. GREAT training program for a beginner salesman, they want to make their money, but the politics, favoritism, and general unease the job gave me made me feel that I could be a better, more ethical salesman (yes, we exist) with another company.
