Complaint Description:

I have had my transmission rebuilt at skyline transmission and have dealt with the owner Pat on several occasions including the initial date I brought it to his shop. He was a great salesman and convinced me they were good, honest, Christian people and would take great care of me. So I brought my vehicle into them and had them check out my truck and Pat told me the transmission definitely needed a complete rebuild and offered me two different services. One was a rebuild with a very short warranty such as maybe 6 months or for a higher price I could do the excellent rebuild and have a 3 yr unlimited mile warranty and would get a loaner to drive at no additional charge for the entire time they had my truck. The problem with this is that the only time I would receive a loaner would be during the initial rebuild and even though I asked and was promised one whenever they had the truck I never received it and had to rent one from somewhere else. Also when I talked with Pat I explained I have a warranty on the vehicle through CARS and that they would help me pay the bill. Pat said that would not be a problem but that he would not show me the parts and would send them to CARS. I again asked him when I picked the vehicle up to see the parts because my father really wanted to see them and Pat would not show them. The bill date was 5/15/2009 and Pat charged me a total of $1,995.11 for the transmission rebuild.

Since the moment the transmission was rebuilt and I picked the vehicle up it has not been right and what happens is first gear constantly slams hard when it shifts, but Pat told me this before I even got back in the vehicle and said it was the computers and that it would take them about a week or so to begin to communicate properly. When the initial rebuild was done it took 3 days longer than the date that Pat told me it would be done and he told me it was because they were having trouble getting the computers to communicate with each other. They had the vehicle a total of 12 days for the initial rebuild. I brought it back on 5/26/09 and told Pat it was still not shifting correctly so he  kept it for a couple
days and told me they made more adjustments to the computers and that it would take a few days but that they would communicate correctly together. After a month I brought it back on 6/29/09 because nothing happened with the computers and it still shifted hard, so this time he told me to bring it back on 7/1/09 and he kept it until 7/06/09 and said they really made some good adjustments and it is all set. After about a week and a half it started doing it again and
I called Pat and told him and he said to give it some time and if it continues after a couple weeks to bring it back. So I called him 8/06/09 and he told me to bring it back to him on 8/10/09 and he had it until 8/14/09. Also on three
of the occasions I brought it in with a full tank of fuel and when I got it back the fuel light was on and the gauge was on empty. Almost every time I take it to them they claim it is an issue with the computers communicating with each
other and that they made adjustments.  The problem is that it has never been cured so I have had to bring it to them on 9/14/09-9/16/09, 11/16/09-11/19/09, 2/23/10-2/25/10, 8/23/10-8/25/10, 10/17/11-10/20/11, and  I recently took it again to them on May 4, 2012 and they again said it was the computer and told me they adjusted it and again I still had the same issue. At this point my warranty was running out and I knew I had to get it fixed so I would continuously bring it to Pat and he claimed to make adjustments to the computer and I still had the problem.  The reason for their being a gap in time as time went on is because I began to feel like a bother to them and they also started to tell me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with vehicle and told me they were not going to do anything to it.

I brought it back again on May 8, May 15, and on May 18, 2012 and was told the same thing every time. I have also asked for a receipt every time I have gone in and they told me they do not do paper work for warranty work being done. On Friday June 15, 2012 I had to pay Amtrak train $200 to go to Chicago because I was afraid of the transmission failing because it had gotten worse so my father drove my girlfriend and I in the mountaineer to the train station downtown Grand Rapids and was very disappointed with how it shifted so he took it back to Pat and Pat said he would do some serious testing and let us know what was wrong with it and would not give it back until it was for certain fixed.

On Friday June 22 I went to Pat and told him this is not right leaving me without a vehicle like this and that I needed something to drive for the weekend so he told me to take my Mountaineer because they are closed Saturdays and Sundays and to have it back on Monday June 25, 2012. On this day he asked me how it ran and I told him it was shifting hard and asked what was going to be done. Pat told me face to face that the transmission was shot and they would rebuild it again at no charge and have it to me hopefully by June 29 and my girlfriend was there and heard him say this. On June 29 my father went and talked to Pat face to face and pat told him that they are trying to get it fully rebuilt that day but it would for certain be completed absolutely no later than Tuesday July 3 and it is now July 16 that he finally
called and said it is done. This time it is a total of 31 days they have had the vehicle and during this time we drove past the building several times because it is only about a half mile from where I live and my truck would be sitting outside in the far back where it was vulnerable to being broken into and vandalized while the front parking lot was completely open.

My father went in to speak with Pat on 7/16/12 when Pat called and said my vehicle was done. Pat would then talk to my father face to face and go on to try and put the blame of the transmission being bad on several different things. My father asked to see the parts and Pat refused to show them. To sum it up he now changed his story from the very  beginning and said instead of the computer that now it was the tires but the problem with this is that Pat told me before I ever took possession of the vehicle back on May 15, 2009 that the transmission was shifting hard due to the computers not communicating. I have had the tires replaced on 02-02-2010 and the vehicle had only 93,700 miles on it and at the time. When Pat did the rebuild in May of 09 the vehicle only had 88,059 miles so less than 5,700 miles were accumulated between the rebuild and the new tires being put on. Then on 2/4/11 I had the tires balanced and rotated with 101,873 miles on the vehicle and then just had them recently balanced and rotated again on 4/23/12 with 114,261 miles and was told by the tire expert at Discount Tire that my tires at that time were in excellent condition and that the wear was minimum and even. Also Pats mechanic Dustin just stated that the wire to the o2 sensor melted on the manifold and that it was the person that replaced the o2 sensors fault and that the vehicle just started running poorly because of it. The problem with this is that the o2 sensors were replaced on 5/7/10; this was over 2 years ago! This vehicle also gets its alignment checked annually at Belle Tire to prevent any damage to the tires and they only needed to align it once on 2/5/10 and they have not had to realign it since and Belle Tire says it is because of how well the vehicle is maintained. Dustin also made claims that I stated that I was having issues with Belle Tire and I have never said that to him or anybody. The only things Belle Tire has done for me is my alignment and they wrote up a quote for new springs
and shocks which I had replaced brand new shortly after the quote was written at All Points Tire and Auto. All Points Tire and Auto have done the majority of the work on this vehicle including all new brakes all the way around the vehicle, the springs and shocks, the front hub assemblies, etc. Pat and Dustins other claim is that the engine needs a rebuild and that the truck is leaking oil. This truck has never leaked a drop of oil since the day I purchased it and I have proof of this. They also claim that my truck now hops when the wheel is turned and that my differentials and all wheel drive is not
working correctly and this is something the vehicle has never done so if it is doing it now than it was damaged by Skyline Transmission. I also have the mechanics that can testify to this.

My vehicle was damaged and vandalized by this company and I want full restitution. We propose that the truck is thoroughly inspected by a nonbiased professional mechanic and searched for evidence of fresh damage caused by
them.  From there if too much damage was done we want for the vehicle to be replaced by them because we are afraid that the vehicle will never be the same again. We also want full reimbursement for the $1,995 paid to him for the rebuild and to be reimbursed for the fuel they used and the rentals I have had to use over the years.

Again I have had to rent a car during all these dates mentioned above including these last 31 days Pat has had it and that is not counting future days beyond 7/16/12 that Pat has it in his possession. It is a silver 2002 all wheel drive Mercury Mountaineer.  My understanding of the warranty from Pat is that if the vehicle needed work they would always provide a loaner just like he told me on day 1 of when I met him and that for 3 years I would have absolute peace of mind on my transmission and I have not received any of this. I have put only approx. 25,000 miles on the truck since the rebuild in May of 2009 and I am scared to drive it anywhere because of the worry of the transmission breaking down and leaving me stranded ever since the day I have picked it up from Pat. I have had to rent a vehicle every time and every day that my truck has been in their shop because they gave me a loaner the first time I brought it to them which I believe was to solicit my business and now every time I have had to go back to try to get them to fix it and they tell me no on a loaner because they do not have one thats available; but they did have one when I was paying the initial $2,000 for the rebuild. The cost for rental during the 31 days is $700 and the total for the 20 other days he had it over the years is $1,200 for a grand total of $1,900.
