I was left stranded by Spirit Airlines in Bogota Colombia last January 14th when I was denied to board a plane even after paying $963 for the flight, without warning nor refund.

Spirit could not change my flight date as I requested within their policy and I had to buy another ticket from Niagara Falls NY to Colombia and then they cancelled my return. I end up paying for a round trip flight that I never used due to their failure, they just wanted to rip me off like they do to so many people. The government should protect consumers agains this airline scams.

I filed a complain with the Colombia aviation authorities as well as the US Department of Transportation DOT's Aviation Consumer Protection Division (ACPD and I will pursue them a small claims court in Niagara Falls NY and I'd appreciate any advise to succeed in all these jurisdictions.

Civil Judgement against Spirit Airlines

Hello, just update on my case, the Civil Court of Niagara Falls on June 12, 2013, notice of small claims/commercial claims judgement for index number SC-000059-13/NF ordered Spirit Airlines Inc., to pay total damages for $1,566.60.

I received the payment after sending a copy to Spirit headquarter in Florida within the 90 days ordered by the court in case of non compliance.

The no-show of any representative from Spirit Airlines plaid part of the court decision, nevertheless the judge evaluated my evidence and sided with my arguments.

If you are victim of Spirit Ailines or any other, do not hesitate to bring them to court. As consummers that sostain these companies, we have right to obtain a fair service for our money and not denying the service even after making a payment with our hard earned money, defend your rights and your income.

I found very suspicius that what someone wrote here to respond is exactly the arguments of Spirit Airlines in my case, even  the wording like from what the rep told me on the phone, no doubt, this is the airline trying to save face against all the scams they do. I'll see you in court and I will place the results here. Consumers rights are above greedy companies excesses.

This happened to me at one point, and it was my fault. I was enraged and frustrated, but it was still my fault.

Let me see if I can guess the sequence of events.

You booked a ticket for the wrong day departing NY, and tried to change it. They didn't have flights, or with the change fee it was too expensive, so you booked a second 1-way trip.

After taking the one way trip and completing your stay in Colombia you went to the airport to try to board your return flight, to find it cancelled. Why? Because you didn't take the original leg.

In this case, you must change the original reservation. If you have missed your outbound flight, your only option is to take a credit if any for the original and buy a round trip.

The airline policies are clear, but airlines other than Spirit are often much more flexible and accommodating.

Don't confuse that with a requirement on the part of the airlines to accommodate mistakes, but most will work with you much more than our friends at Spirit.

Good luck in the future.

So I guess they must have just pulled your name out of the hat and you were the "lucky" one...yep makes total sense.

Spirit could not change my flight date as I requested within their policy and I had to buy another ticket from Niagara Falls NY to Colombia and then they cancelled my return.
- Since you want to be asked..can you please explain this statement in a bit more detail.

Nope, I wasn't late, in fact 3 hrs before departure as international flight norms but the flight was overbook I believe, this is the time when thousands of Colombians r returning from holidays back home plus tourists, next time ask and do not asume

Why were you denied boarding?

Oh and you can't just say "For absolutely no reason".  Whether you agree with it or not, there was a reason they gave you.  Most likely this was due to you arriving too late either at the check-in counter or the actual gate...so why not fill us in?
