My mother is hospitalized and I have POA.  The bank has locked her account and won't unlock it until she goes into the branch.  She spoke to them on the phone from her hospital bed, I had to hold the phone to her ear, and after 10 mins of talking to this 1-800 rep he still refused to unlock account.  This has happened numerous times in the last few years. They make it impossible and won't allow you to your own money!  Filing a BBB report.

And yes, fighting and infection in her spinal chord, straight our of surgery on her neck and battling MRSA, the money at this point IS mine.

If you have a POA that gives you the authority to make finanancial decisions on HER behalf.  It does not change the ownership of any of her accounts.  It does NOT all of the sudden make it "your" money. The account is your mom's and the money is her account is still her's.  As a POA you are required to act in her best interest.

The bank in in the same position, they are required to protect her money, making sure that only authorized people have access to her funds.  It now appears that they were attempting to verify her identity over the phone but YOU stopped it.

You have still failed to tell us WHY they are not accepting the POA.  I would bet they have given you a reason, and perhaps even a solution as to what you need to do.  You also have still failed to tell us why if this is an ongoing issues why you have not attempted to take care of this before this point such as having your mom add you to the account making the whole POA unneeded.

The fact you have POA is great and you do have the ability to make financial decisions on behalf of your parent, however the POA does NOT provide you ownership rights to your parent's account, so the bank is correct at this point in protecting your Mom's account.  Your solution in this case would be:

1.  Go to the bank and get new signature cards in which you will be requesting to be added to Mom's account.  The bank should be able to also pdf you the documents.

2.  Make sure the bank highlights exactly where she needs to sign and where you need to sign.

3.  Get your parent's signature on the document (probably needs to sign in more than one place)

4.  Return document to the bank.

This will give you access to the account prior to anything bad happening to your parent.  Once submitted, it will take about 24 hours (generally) to process the change - after that, you should be able to access the funds.  I understand this may be a burden to your parent at this point, but this is what needs to happen.

Best of luck to you....

The Rest of the Story

Did you no see I am the POA?  And yes, fighting and infection in her spinal chord, straight our of surgery on her neck and battling MRSA, the money at this point IS mine. From her hospital bed, me holding the phone to her ear (against my best judgement) they just kept going and going and going.  I could not subject my mother to anything else that could upset her.  Too bad it happened anyway.

So, there's the rest of the story for ya.  Maybe it will clear it up to anyone ele who has questions.

Your choice of words here is very interesting.  As you stated that they won't allow you access to "your" money.  But this is not your account.  They will give her access, they just need to come in and (presumably) prove her identity.

So that is the issue, the bank is attempting to protect your mom by making sure that only your mom, or someone authorized by your mom, can access her accounts.  It is hard to call this a "RipOff".  Yes, you say that you ARE authorized but apparently not to the satisfaction of the bank.

I would bet this would be a lot clearer if you let us know why the account was locked.  Why they won't accept your POA.  And if this has happned multiple times, how did you get it fixed previously or if you never got it fixed why did you remain with that bank?

There are multiple types of POA's.  For example of you just have a Healthcare POA it means nothing for financial situations. As an alternative why haven't you had your mom put you on as a Joint Account Holder, which would eliminate the need for any POA.
