I had a SunTrust checking account with a PLC for overdraft protection. When I moved away from Tennessee in 2002, I closed the account. I had a zero balance and the PLC for overdrafts had never been used. In May 2006, a credit card that reports monthly credit scores from Transunion showed a precipitous decline in my FICO from the 800s to low 700s. At the time, I assumed it was due to a loan I had recently acquired to purchase a car.

However, when I paid off the loan (18 months ahead of schedule) and my score did not recover, I became suspicious. I ordered all three credit reports and all three showed that beginning in May 2006 (4 years after closing the account), the PLC for my SunTrust checking account started to register me as having an unpaid $30 balance!!! My credit score was taking a beating for a pittance owed on a long defunct and closed account. None of the bureaus could resolve the dispute, because they needed the account number which was different from the actual checking account.

After FIVE calls to SunTrust, no one their could locate the account number either! Indeed, all representatives scanned their database using my social security number. They found no delinquent accounts and could not find the account number the credit bureaus needed. Yet all three credit reports somehow believe that I have a past due SunTrust account.

This is very shoddy business on the part of SunTrust. I am 50 years old and have never missed a payment of any kind in my life. My credit used to be perfect until SunTrust mysteriously began reporting me for a mythical, phantom account delinquency. the fact that no person could even address the issue with me over the phone at SunTrust is even further proof of their inadequacies toward customer service. I only hope this bank suffers the same dilemma as IMAC and others. It would be well deserved.
