Here is how to protect yourself

#2Consumer Suggestion

Sat, October 15, 2011

Follow the steps below as quickly as possible to protect your identity and ensure it isn't compromised further.   Steps #1 and #10 are the MOST important and should be done immediately.

1.  Use a service like Equifax - costs $14.95 per month - and you can put an automatic reoccuring fraud alert on your SSN.  This way no one else can take out credit in your name.  As part of your custom fraud message include your cell or home phone # with specific instructions to speak to you in person before granting credit.  If a merchant fails to do this - you can sue them.

2.  Review your credit report and shut down all lines of credit that do not belong to you.

3.  Change your phone # and ensure your new # is unpublished and unlisted.   Do not provide this number to anyone unless absolutely required.  Many stores will ask for this when you check out but you are not required to provide it.

4.  If you do not live in an apartment complex with locking mailboxes, invest in a locking mailbox either at the post office or a storefront mail service.   Have all sensitive correspondence and bills sent to the lockbox.

5.  Go paperless on bills, etc. as much as you can.

6.  Shred confidential paper documents before placing them in the trash, or invest in an ink stamp that will obscure any confidential text.

7.   Be careful about what you post online.  If you are on Facebook, check your privacy settings and move them to friends and family only.   Delete yourself from as many social websites as possible.

8.   Check out the website www.spokeo.com   Put in your name and search.  If it comes up with a lot of info on you, go to their main page and at the bottom click on the privacy link and follow directions to remove yourself from their site.

9.  Keep as much of your personal business off the internet as possible.  Set up an anonymous email on Hotmail if you feel you need to blog or post comments somewhere.

10.  Alert the police and fill out a police report if your identity has been stolen.  Do this ASAP as this will be critical in proving you are not responsible for the charges should someone come after you financially.

11.   Do not under any circumstances pay a collection agency that is attempting to collect on an account that was fraudulently set up in your name.  Provide them and the merchant they are collecting for a copy of your police report.

Hope this helps.
