Okay, last fall was my last semester in engineering school in college. During this period I was seeking my future full term employer. I had some interesting interviews during this process that people may want to know about.

The first is Cooper Power Systems, a manufacturer of electrical equipment. The day before the scheduled interview I received a call from someone in their HR department. The individual left a message with a phone number that went to a completely different company. He didn't even know his own number! They ended up calling again and I was able to talk to them, they wanted to reschedule my interview time and I accepted.

The next morning I get a call from career services at my school wondering why I wasn't at my interview at the originally scheduled time! I called them back and told them about the call the previous day and we got it straightened out.

So I go to the interview. The first thing I notice is the interviewer is wearing jeans and a ratty polo shirt. I am dressed in a suit and he looks like he crawled out of bed and couldn't even find business casual clothes. He told me the guy from the day before had not relayed any of the schedule changes to him, which is a joke. So the interview goes on and he just generally had a snotty attitude throughout it and was rude. Like he was superior to me. He complained about a former employer of his during the interview. I had kind of an odd email address and he made a point of picking it out and saying something to the effect that I was stupid to have picked it. He was very unprofessional and it was just generally a farce.

The next interview was with Terex-Cedarapids who manufacturer paving machinery. The interview started off well enough. However touring their plant I was very unimpressed as it looked like a war zone. I also got the impression that the place has considerable friction between the union and salaried employees. This is not something you should express to a potential employee.

The interview itself wasn't terrible to start. I went through three levels of interviewing. They asked me if I was married which I thought was bizarre and too personal for the situation. The last stage felt like an interrogation and was pretty intense even for a full-time interview.

They informed me they would be interviewing a few others and contacting me within a month. I sent them a thank you to follow up within a week of the interview. To this day I still have not received anything back from them. Not even a rejection letter and I received no response when trying to contact them. They also offered to pay me for travel expenses and again they never sent me paperwork or anything.

The final interview was with Sauer-Danfoss a hydraulics manufacturer. This required taking a day off classes and driving four plus hours. My impression was the interview went well. I sent them a thank you the day after also.

Roughly 10 days after the interview I got a call from an HR person wondering if I was still interested. I told them I was and they said they would be wrapping up interviews and calling me back in a week.

Almost two weeks went by and I heard nothing back. So I called the person I had spoken to back and left a message. Four days later he calls me back and tells me the interviews were taking longer than expected and he would call me back the next week. You know what happened? No calls, no letters nothing. Now almost 6 months later I still have not heard anything back. I gave up on them at this point and figured if they can't call me back I'm not calling them.

The other part that bothers me is I had to lose a day of classes for this and drive eight hours round trip. I used maybe 60 dollars of gas for the trip and they never once offered to reimburse me for it. I realize I should be glad to have had the interview, but still it is common for companies to repay you for long trips.

So in general be careful when going to interviews with these companies, because they may pull the same stuff with you. However it did end happy and I am with an employer that I plan to be with for a good long time. One that doesn't treat you like crap and actually wants to hire decent people. I hope someone from these companies sees this and can make a positive change to their process in the future.
