The ONLY reason a catalytic converter goes bad, is because the engine does not run properly. The first thing to do is a tune-up. They did that. You don't give ant indication of the time involved between the tune-up, and the timing belt swap, but it really does not matter. The brakes were done because that's a safety issue. You could have told them no, but they would have made you tow the vehicle out. Florida Laws allow this. As for the timing belt, you give no indication of mileage on the truck, but I'll assume it's over 105K. Without removing the timing covers, they would not be able to see the belt. They should have gone by the mileage, but I guess they figured they were emptying your purse with the actual cause of the complaint. A timing belt will not cause the problems you originally took it there for. I'll sum it up for you: "Cats" overheating-tune engine-done Brakes bad-safety issue(Fl Law)-done(could have refused) Engine won't run-timing belt replacement-done You're lucky the valves didn't get bent if the belt actually broke. It probably jumped a tooth.
