I purchased a turtle from turtleshack.com. I bought a common musk turtle for $43 and then payed the $30 additional for overnight shipping. That's a total of $73 on a baby turtle. When we first recieved it my wife and I were very excited. He was of course very tiny and adorable. Before I finish I would like to add that we have had about 15 turtles in the last ten years and currently have a 13 year old snapping turtle in great health. We do know how to care for a turtle, we have all the correct lighting, basking areas, filtration system, heating and food. We spent about $300 on the setup alone.

The very first day noticed a fungus like supstiance on one of his feet and his shell was soft. So first thing we did was call turtleshack.com to see 1. what was wrong and 2. how to care for him properly. My wife called 3 days in a row and there was never any answer. She also left several messages on thier answering machine and no one ever got back to us. After another couple of days the fungus began to spead. We began calling pet stores and doing research online. The pet stores of course did'nt deal with baby turtles but we found some helpful information online. All the while still trying to get through to the turtleshack.com phone number.

We then went to Petco and bought Zoo med repti turtle sulfa dip. That was another $10, but we really did'nt care about spending the money as long as it was going to save our turtle. We closely followed the intructions and waited. At first we thought he was going to be fine, but another short couple of days later he did pass away. My wife and I are both animal lovers and were very upset to have not been able to save him.

My wife then immediatly called the turtleshack.com phone number and finally got through. They seemed very unconcerned and told us to put him in a ziplock bag and freeze him. They told us they would give us store credit once they recieved the dead turtle. They told my wife we would indeed have to pay to ship it back and told her that we would recieve an email in less then 24 hours with the shipping information. It has currently been over 96 hours without hearing from them and keeping a dead turtle in our freezer. We have continually tried to get ahold of them via email and phone with no responce.

In our opinion they neglect and abuse their turtles from the time of birth for so many people to be recieving sick turtles. And we are not the first. We will continue to spread the word out about them because my wife and I can not stand the thought of any animal being mistreated and hope others will do the same. If your considering a purchase from turtleshack.com we strongly suggest you go with someone else!!
