They problem with the police report may not have been U-hauls fault. Just recently at my store a report was filled, and the truck found the same day. They police officer said they would take care of clearing the report. Two day later I received a phone call from the police asking about the truck. I told him we got it back, and the officer who told us where it was at said he would clear the report. The detective said the report was not cleared and still considered stolen. The police officer did not do his job, and could have caused a real big mess for the customer who had legally rented it the next day. About hooking up the trailer I'm sorry. If you went to a regular U-haul (not a gas station or something like it) they should have hooked it up for you, and knew what they were doing. You did the right thing by going to another U-haul and have it checked. I have no problem if someone comes by my place, and asks me to look at the trailer. Now about the trailer coming off. You as a renter are responsible to ensure the trailer is secured to your vehicle during the trip. When you make a stop at a gas station, or start out the next day you should ensure the hand wheel is tight on the ball and the chains are not dragging. The safety brake does not prevent the trailer from hitting your vehicle. Late charges? I'm not sure about it, if on your contract it states a time for return and you were there before that I'm not sure why they would charge you an extra day. Double check your contract for the date of return.
