I check my bank account periodically and this morning when I checked it was over drawn by $187.43 I was very upset because they had charged me for 3 fees instead of one....

My balance was $950.29 on Monday and I had a $543.00 debit that was subtracted which left me a balance of $407.29, a pending debit of $17.58 (bal $389.71), a pending debit of $62.25 (bal $327.46) and a pending debit of 12.89 which would leave my balance at $314.57 (this is the amount that showed available in my acct). I wrote out 2 checks one to my savings acct for $300.00 which cleared and my balance was $14.57 and then I had a check to my Church for $100.00 which left me with a negative balance of -$86.00. instead of me receiving one fee of -$34.00 they charged me $102.00 in fees because they put the checks through first and the pending debits through last. I called customer service and expressed how unfair their method was and it only hurts the customer by panelizing them triple times for one mistake. The customer service rep and their supervisor were not sympathetic to my situation and instead of saying as a courtesy they will adjust my account of at least two of the fees, she said "YES you have been a customer with us along time but thats all the more reason why you should know that's the way we do business, we process checks first and the more larger checks will go first".....In return I choose to close my account and take my business else where, in hopes that someone else will value me as a customer and not look for potential flaws so they can get extra fees.

For conversation sake I am going to say that you were keeping a register, and your reference to "checking my bank account periodically" means that you only are using on-line banking as a reference and another tool to manage your account.  So if this is the case that is exactly what you should be doing.  However, if that is the case this means that you KNEW you were overdrafting your account.

Now in looking at the Fee Schedule available on-line.

https://www.unionbank.com/Images/all_about_personal-0409_tcm9-19080.pdf

You will notice in the Fee Schedule for Overdraft/NSF Fees in a 12 month period

1-2 is $22 per item

3-5 is $30 per item

6+ is $34 per item.

Since you were assessed 3 Overdraft fees for a total of $102, that means you have had at least 5 previous overdrafts.  Based on how you wrote this report, in the previous instances you probably had nothing pending so were only assessed what you "thought".  When you are overdrafting you are using the bank's money.  A checking account is not a line of credit.  You also need to be very careful as since these are checks.  If you continue to overdraft and a check comes in while you are in overdraft causes, you may find out that they will just return the check unpaid.  If that happens depending on the company you could have a lot more problems(and expenses) making even the $102 seem cheap.

Just in this specific case.  Why did you write a check to your SAVINGS for $300?  Had you written it for about $200 you would not have had any issues and still had a few dollar in cushion, just in case you don't keep a register and happen to "forget" about a small transaction.  Even if you only got 1 Overdraft fee of $34 that makes no sense why you would want to put yourself into that position.  Because I can guarantee you that you are not making that much interest to make it worth while to loose $34.

Also, don't expect your next bank to be any different.  As just about every bank will post transactions highest to lowest.  Just be sure to ask them when you sign up for an account.  The simple answer is to not spend more than you have available.

If I read your report correctly, your bank returned two of the fees, leaving you with a single overdraft charge for a single overdraft that you admit you made.  Sounds fair to me.  You obviously haven't read a lot of the reports on this site, or you'd know that your bank was being quite generous.

Good luck finding a bank that does not process debits from highest to lowest.  Although you appear to have been unaware of the process, it is common at all of the major banks.  They support their "free" checking accounts with the overdraft fees they collect.  With the advent of debit cards, that allowed them to multiply the fees by arranging debits to be processed from highest to lowest.

The fees are entirely avoidable if you keep a register and do not overdraft.  Your bank seems to have given you a pass this time which amounts to a free learning experience.  Don't expect things to be different at your new bank.
