Universal Gas & Electric Corporation Casual inquiry turns into sign up, Misrepresented pricing. Huge cancellation fee. Southfield Michigan
Last September a young man was canvassing my neighborhood and asked if I was interested in lowering my gas bills over the next 5 years. Of course I was and I still am. He wanted by most recent gas bill and as I understood it someone was going to analyze it and call me with more information. I signed his little clipboard. BIG MISTAKE!!! I was busy and didn't have time to read the flyer he left with me, so I avoided the calls that came in the next few months, thinking I was postponing a decision until I had time to do some research. Then WHAM on my December Consumers bill there they were on my bill charging me 27 cents more per CCF than Consumers was this amounted to a $27.00 hike in my cost. I called immediately and asked to cancel they told me there is a $250.00 cancellation fee. I argued that I had never signed a contract. They said they would send me a copy. Remember they guy's clip board??? That was the contract, and now that it had been well over 30 days I was locked in. I am at a loss. They aren't saving me any money unless the price of gas goes up .27 per ccf. I guess since they now have me roped into a 5 year contract I should just pay the $250.00 and be done with it. In 10 months I will have paid that much in over charges. It is just that I have not had much work for January and can't afford to fork out an extra $250 any time soon. Ignorance is not bliss!!!

where on the internet is this lawsuit mentioned? there was someone asking about how to go about a class action suit, but to my knowledge there is no such lawsuit filled. oh, and by the way, i believe the state has looked at this company, fined them a small fee, and that's it. no help so far.

Please Search Universal Gas and Electric to see that a lawsuit was filed against this aweful company.
I was researching the internet to see what Natural Gas Prices are right now, and came across the lawsuit article. They even made provisions so that we don't have to pay that 250 dollar fee to get out from under the contract!! With the prices being so much higher then MichCon, I could not afford the extra 250 dollars, plus another 15 dollars for switching back. I was ripped off and lied to also. MichCon Gas prices fluctuate, and last winter, the prices actually went down during the winter season. My daughters were only paying aroound 79 to 85 per cc. I was locked in at 1.04 per cc and got shutoff notices because my monthly Gas bills were SO HIGH I could not pay them.
Now I am wondering when the consumers(We the people who got ripped off) will be notified. Thankful that we have government offices looking out for us. I plan to make some phone calls this week to cancel Universal Gas. Good Luck . Relief is on it's way!

I also got suckered into their contact. A salesman caught me as I was pulling out of my drive way & I just happened to have my mail (& consumer bill) in my car. He asked to see my bill & Then good news he could cut my heat bill in half! and he caught me just in time before the prices went sky high. He promised me the lowest prices & that they would never go higher.
Little did I know UGE was over a dollar higher than Consumers Emergy. In fact the highest of all the gas companies!
and UGE does not lower their prices- it's a fixed rate. and once they trap you it's no more Mr Nice Guy. They got you & it's cost extra to break free!
