Recently, my wife and I received an invitation from Uniway of Greenville for a sales presentation. Without knowing anything about Uniway, we decided to go (Plus you could win all these great prizes, etc...).

We went to the sales presentation on April 8th. Mr. Jody Kennington gave a great (However, inaccurate) sales presentation. Based on the information he presented, my wife and I decided to become members at the charge of $1,649.

During the presentation, Mr. Kennington stated that Uniway was able to purchase computers at wholesales prices and he specifically mentioned Dell as a supplier.

On the 10th of April, my wife called to get a price on a Dell computer. The sales staff immediately informed us that Uniway is not able to get computers, however, they could refer us to a local company that would make a system for us. Strike one.

Later that same day, we decided to get some pricing on other brandname products that Mr. Kennington stated in his presentation. Again, it was unavailable. Strike two.

My wife and I were getting worried about what we had gotten ourselves into. I decided to do some research with the Better Business Bureau. We quickly discovered that Uniway has an "Unsatisfactory" rating and there are several complaints that are unresolved. Strike three.

Fortunately, we read our contract. We understood that we only had three days to cancel our membership and to get a refund. We acted quickly and I took off of work to personally deliver a written cancellation (It must be written, and it must be received within three business days of signing the contract).

When I arrived, I told the Uniway representative (Karen) that I wanted to cancel my membership. Contrary to the owners rebuttal to a previous complaint (No questions asked"), Karen asked when I signed up. I told her the 8th of April. Next she asked why I wanted to cancel. I informed her that the salesman told us something that was not true and that we had discovered some very negative things through the Better Business Bureau.

Her immediate reply was "Have you also read about what a rip off the Better Business Bureau is?". I then stated, that regardless the salesman told us something that was untrue which was a particular reason that we decide to join. She did aplogize for that.

Fortunately, I gave her a written cancellation and received a sign receipt so there should be no problem.

Still, I left wondering if they would have accepted a cancellation after the three days knowing that the salesman had said things that were not true. I think a tape recording of the sales presentation would be a good idea for everyone attending just in case, especially knowing all of the information out there about Uniway.

Be careful and do some research on Uniway before going to the sales presentation.

I used to live in Greenville, SC, and we joined Uniway soon after in opened, had to have been in the early '70's. We were treated with respect and honesty when we were presented with the pro- gram. All questions were answered, but we still had second thoughts when we joined. It was a big step for us, just married and couldn't afford to waste what little money we had. I think many people do not read contracts and agreements; then they are embarrassed when they try to get out of something. They then blame an innocent Co. for their own "change of mind,""fight with spouse""tight money situation," etc. Most who complain on these "ripoffs," have only them- selves to blame. We did take advantage of all that Uniway had to offer. Of course, if Uniway does not offer a low enough price, we would not buy it. You can see what they offer, then compare it to local competi- tion. We found, on most cases, that Uniway beat others by a lot. We saved several $100's on fur- niture alone; we got styles and pieces that local stores would not even carry in their showrooms. I'd estimate that we got back 10 times the member- ship fee in savings. I'm glad Uniway is still in business. Contrary to what others may say----the fact that they are in business IS TOO an indication that the good outweighs the bad. A satisfied Uniway customer.
