Do you ever remember when your bank account maybe went in the red and the bank would allow you to correct this that day before going ahead and adding charges to your account? Well, those were the good ol' days when there was such a thing as customer service. Not with USBank anyway.

Here's an example of what I am talking about:

On 8/10 I deposited $5,300.00 in my account to pay off credit cards, etc. I also made a purchase online using my debit card on 8/11. I checked my bank account the morning of the 13th and noticed on 8/12 my balance read 281.31 (underlined). I clicked on the underlined balance and it pulls up a box that shows I have 287.56 unavailable balance and available balance is -6.25. Now, I have been told by a USBank teller that when the balance is still in pending state, (underlined), that I can still get it out of the red if I put monies in my account before it goes out of pending state.

I immediately deposited $210.00 before 3pm that day. My balance now reads $491.31, (underlined). I click on the underlined 491.31 and see that I have available funds of 131.67 and unavailable funds of $359.64. But the next entry after this one is a $31.00 overdraft charge. I called and the clerk, who is not nice, she basically said, "Too bad, you were over in your account by $6.00. I can't do anything for you." According to my BALANCE COLUMN, I never went in the hole. EVER..... Because the purchase on the 11th still had not cleared; it was still in pending. This teller tried to tell me I was never told I could put money in the bank before the pending cleared and that I would not be charged. So now I'm a liar too.... Great customer service...... NOT!!!! I asked to talk with her supervisor and she said, She'll tell you the same thing. Then she put in on hold and I went to la la land. I hung up.

On Monday, the 16th I log on to check my account and I again click on the underlined positive amount and this time I see negative $-4,802.47 available balance. This pretty much freaked me out. I call the bank and they tell me my $5,000.00 check was sent to the fraud department. HOLY COW!!!!! I talk with the person in fraud and she tells me the check was refused by my other bank because it was not signed on the back. Man O' Man. I immediately deposit a $6,000.00 check. Of course, I don't get the full credit of it until they hold it for a day.

During this time the item I bought online on the 11th finally clears the bank on the 16th. Good timing I'd say. AND guess what, the bank charges me another $31.00 for the same item they charged me when it was in pending state. Is this a scam or what???? Plus I was charged another $31.00 and a $6.00 charge back fee for the mistake on the $5,000.00. I was told to go to the branch where I deposited my money and see if they would give me back any money. I did get them to refund the two $31.00 charges because I said they should have not accepted the check without a signature.

I should not have been charged a single penny but they do not want to work with you so I am in the process of getting as far away from this bank as possible. BEWARE of USBank They are scary.

Gotta disagree here. Now you didn't mention how you made the $5300.00 deposit. Either way, it's possible you got to the ATM or branch past their cut off point. A good way to verify if you've done this is to go online and check the deposit date. If I'm correct, you technically made the deposit the same day as making the debit card purchases. Another snag is the amount of the check. Any deposit over $5000 must be reported to the government. (Not a US Bank rule, this is a federal law.) This usually involves some sort of check clearing period. Thank you, Homeland Security. Another thing I wanted to mention; If you finish a business day with a negative available balance; you'll get a fee (or many fees depending on the account activity.) Whether you put money in the next day or not, the fee will still generate.

Underlined vs. not underlined

The underlined balance indicates a difference between your account balance and the available balance. If the balance shown is not underlined it just means your account and available balance are one in the same. Remember US Bank charges overdraft fees for a negative AVAILABLE balance and it states it clearly in the policies posted on their website. I used to work at a different bank which, unlike US Bank, had more ethical policies.

I have US Bank as well. Seems that I get weekly overdraft charges. I get paid every two weeks. I got paid Friday of a couple of weeks ago and spent a total of $78 over the week. Yesterday I got TWO overdraft charges! What?!?!?! I haven't even spent a PENNY in over a week and a half! Also that whole UNDERLINED thing- what I don't understand is how I can have things that are underlined from over a year ago, when some are in 'regular' font from 3 weeks ago.

Um... Since they agreed that the teller should have noted that the check was missing an endorsement and refunded your two charges I'm not at all sure what your beef is? It looks like they did work with you and did the right thing here. As a side note, US Bank not quite two years ago changed thier handeling of debit card purchases. It used to be that a debit card purchase was not subtracted from your account until it was actually processed. Now, in response to significant customer demand, when the bank gives a merchant an authorization for a debit card purchase they immediately remove the funds from your available balance. Also, US Bank offices here in the metro area no longer change business days at 3:00pm. You can now make your deposits up until 6:00pm at metro offices and ATM Machines. Finally, if you can, I'd sign up for overdraft protection. If it's utilized correctly, it's comparitively (versus overdraft charges)cheap protection agains overdraft fees. Good luck!
