It seems USBank has a new policy where they hold payroll checks for verification even longer than they did previously. I don't know exactly when it started, but I noticed it this weekend - unfortunately for me. Previously, it was their policy that if you deposited a check in an ATM before 6 p.m., it would get credited that day. If you deposited a check on a Saturday, it would get credited on Monday. No problem. So that's what I did this past Saturday and I found out yesterday that they only credited my account with $100 of the $261 I deposited so when checks came through on Monday, they bounced - even though, technically, I had enough money in my account.

When they finally credited my account the other $161, I took out $20 at an ATM and after they took out my overdraft charges from Monday (which, at this point, I still didn't suspect I had) - guess what? - I was overdrawn again but only because they charged my account the overdraft charges. So of course I got charged another overdraft charge. When I called the bank on Thursday (which is when I was notified of the overdraft charges) I spoke to a woman who was totally rude and told me this policy was sent to me in a brochure in November or December. This new policy is not posted on the ATM at the bank - which is where I always make my deposits. I think the policy is ridiculous - especially with regard to payroll checks.

I've also argued with them about their policy of putting through large checks first (on purpose, I KNOW!) to overdraw your account , then putting the smaller checks through so they can charge more money on overdrafts. They don't listen, they're not sympathetic and they just don't care.

I've called US Bank, I've e-mailed them and I get nowhere with them. There attitude is ALWAYS "We don't care. That's our policy and if you don't like it, too bad for you".

Unfortunately, many banks are doing the same thing with regard to payroll checks deposited at ATM machines. My suggestion is to ask your employer about direct deposit. My husband's company issues paper checks on Thursday, but since we have direct deposit, that money is submitted at the end of the business day on Wednesday, and the whole amount is available at the open of business day on Thursday.

When a check is deposited, the first $100 is made available that business day (if before 5pm). If it is a local check the rest will be made available the next business day. Funds need to be credited to the bank before it is available to you, to prevent check kiting fraud. I advise you go into your local branch and ask to see a banker to understand the system. Every bank implies these regulations.
