Went to VIP in Rockland Maine on 4/21/15 to get an oil change and winter tire swap out. Sat in waiting area for 15 minutes then was asked to go out and “look” at tires. Guy’s name was Casey and a technician named Chris. He started out by pointing to a tear in the rubber bead area, no effect on the actual metal bead portion just the rubber covering, then said it was not able to be used as it was a safety concern he then went on to say the tires were over ten years old and could not be put on the car as they were “too old” and it was against Maine inspection policy to do so. I said to him you have been the only ones to put these tires on and off for years, are you telling me you ruined my tires doing so? He said literally nothing to this.

I am an ASE Gold Certified Master Technician and have been for over twenty years along with being a Maine state certified inspector myself. I have never heard of such a policy. I was upset to say the least. These tires they were talking about were Michelin E rated tires at a cost of near $300.00 per tire that had less than 10000 miles on them and are used 5 months a year. My 2005 Silverado truck has 70000 miles total on it and I bought the tires 4 years ago.

I do have pictures of the tires, no issues, no dry rot, no sidewall damage, and I have a good shot of the supposed unsafe bead area. If anyone cares to see them.

As a sidebar when I first went to service counter there was a gentleman that had a white Mazda that was complaining about the exact same thing with regard to the tires being “too old” he left exasperated.

I left went home and called the Maine state inspection unit and Talked to a Mr. LaPierre who informed me not only was that NOT the case but that they have been getting multiple complaints about the VIP store in Rockland.  And that the store had literally just called him about this issue – go figure eh!

I then called the store and asked to speak to the manager and got Casey on the phone I asked him if he was the manager and he said yes, I explained to him about my conversation with the inspection unit and that the tear in the tire had no affect with regard to safety of the tire and asked him to install the tires and that I felt he was trying to take advantage of me. I further told him I expected to pay for the service and wasn’t looking for something for nothing.  He then said – I will have to run this by the store manager and could he have my phone number and he would call me back – yes – after telling me he was the manager he now had to call the manager and run this by him. I gave him my cell phone number.

Casey called me back and left a message saying that his manager would call me back later in the evening  to address this issue – that was 20 hours ago now.

Just called the store today 4/22 @ 12:02 Pm and talked to Casey and explained that the manager didn’t call me back and that it was now on him anything that occurs with regard to this incident going forward. He didn’t care.
