99 Volkswagon Cabrio 26,000 miles on the car catches fire with our daughter driving it on spring break! She was driving to Florida when the VW caught fire over 600 miles away from home in Woodbine, Georgia on I-95. The car caught fire deep in the dash by the firewall. 911 was called and they had her to run as far as she could from the car. This was a very dangerous situation! The firemen said that all of the insulation was on fire and very had to put it out. They said they had never seen insulation burn like that in a car.

We paid to have the car towed to the nearest VW dealer. The car is a lease and 2000 miles out of warrenty so volkswagon will not investigate how the car cought fire and said it is our responsibility through our insurance with a $500 deductable. They said that if she was smoking with the windows down and used the ashtray to put the cigarette out, it has been known that the fire can get sucked up into the dash and catch fire! In that case, Volkswagon should have put warnings on the car (DO not use ashtray with windows down!).

Please contact us if you think that you could help us with this defect and neglect from Volkswagon.

What's an ashtray for then?

d**n. So they said the insulation caught fire because she put a cigarette out in the ashtray with the windows up. Hmmm, what are you supposed to do? Crank the window down and litter the butt? If so, why does the car have an ashtray in the first place? Sounds like a serious design problem to me. I wish you the best of luck with this.
