We took our van to have a oil change on april 18, 2002. We were leaving for a trip out of town, so we asked them to check the transmission fluid. They did, and we were told it was a little low, so the guy added some fluid, and wrapped the rest left in a plastic bag and gave to us to put up.

Well first, the next day, my husband was checking the oil to make sure before we headed out for an 8 hour trip. he found we had only had 4quarts of oil added, and our van called for 5. needless to say, we live 30 miles from the supercenter. so we had to go to the gas station and buy a quart and fill it up at our exspense, when i just paid wal-mart 21.00. My husband made the call to wal-mart and informed them of the screw up, and told them if he had not of checked the oil, we could have blown the engine on our long trip. the said the next change is on them for free.

This brings us to yesterday, may 26, 2002. Oil change is not yet due, but we are going to a family barbeque 70 miles away. My husband is checking the fluids, oil still fine, and transmission is low, so he gets the transmission fluid out the back of the van where he put it the day of the service. he adds a little, then he looks before it is to late, and realizes that this was motor oil the guy put in the transmission on the oil change in april.

We call wal-mart, put off our trip and go down there because we were told on the phone to bring it in and ask for the manager. We get there and get the store manager and the assistant tire lube and express manager. We had told them what had happened, then after my husband, mother and myself get talked to like we are a bunch of liars, they realize that we had got ripped off about the oil change by a quart, and after they tried to tell us, oh no, we put transmission fluid. I brought to his attention, no sir, you did not, you were not the one who did this, and yes, it should have been transmission fluid, but the young boy who did the change apparantley grabbed the wrong bottle and added oil instead of transmission fluid in the transmission.

We finally get a refund for 21.00, and we were told by both managers, to take the van in to any place that does transmission service in wichita falls to get it drained and refilled, and send the bill to them. My husband says I want this in writing, and they both reassure us that we have there word!! take it any where in wichita on monday or tuesday, and they will handle the bill, and if any trouble have the transmission service call them, and they would drive and deliever the check to cover the service. so, we leave assured that the van would get the transmission drained, and filled with the proper fluid. Wal-mart took all responsibility, and would pay all charges.

Well today, monday, may 27, 2002, we realized that the companie that we had already decided to take it to on tuesday, was in fact open today. so my husband calls this company, tells them that walmart is paying to drain, and refill the transmission. they say they need some verification, so my husband says sure, i will call walmart and tell them to call, as walmart said they would if we had any trouble.

Heres the good part..My husband called the same general manager, and tells him the deal, and he says sure, go ahead, and asked if we had called the tire lube and express manager. my husband says no, and he still says go ahead, and i will call him.

Well, still just making sure, husband calls the tire lube and express manager who was gone yesterday when we went in,and tells him the deal, and that the assistant tire lube andexpress manager had gave his word and approval, and the store manager. then he tell s my husband, oh no, we can not do that, and they were not suppose to make that decision.

my husband is boiling at this point, then he calls the manager he had just talked to that gave him the approval earlier, and he says he will call back in a minute. he calls back, and says i am sorry i was under the impression this all took place two days ago..husband boiling over now, says you looked at the order paper, you are lying. you and the assistant tire lube manager both gave your approval and word, and told me, you dont need it in writing partner, you HAVE my WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!

needless to say, the coward lied, lied , lied, and did not follow through with his word. what if we had took our van in like they first said, and then backed out?? we would have had to pay the charge!!!!!! This is the worst case of lying from managment I have EVER SEEN!!! I just cannot beleive this..a huge company like this, and not just one, but TWO managers gave their approval, and there words that the van would be took care of!!!!!

They realized their mistake, and gave their word..So now, I do not beleive that i will EVER TRUST or beleive another word any one with the title manager tells me!!!! If they feed you full of bull, then what is this world coming to?? I will never step foot back in wal-mart again.

#2UPDATE EX-employee responds

I worked at the store in question. It was not the Tire and Lube Express, but I still know the stories from it. Once a car rolled off the rack because it was not put in gear and the parking brake was left off. First, I would call 1-800-WAL-MART. Second, I have never understood why someone would want to have work done on their car at the same place they buy toilet paper and light bulbs. Go to a "real" shop. Wal-Mart is not even cheaper then other places for oil changes. Go to a place where you can watch the work being done. The lube I go to lets me stand next to them while they work. When they are through they even show me that the dipstick is on full. Third, you mentioned that you were surprised that "a huge company like this" would do things such as this. How do you think they got "huge". It was not from ethical business practices. Fourth, they do not pay well. Anyone with a fair knowledge about cars is not going to work someplace for $7-$8 an hour when they could go to a "real" shop and make more. It just goes to figure that they are not going to get the best workers, so mistakes are going to happen. I wish you(and anyone) good luck getting compensation from them. Even though the cost to have your work done will not be high, it will be tough to get it out of them(but that store manager you talked to makes well over $100,000 a year). The fact of the matter is that they would not put it into writing becuase thay did not have the authority to do this, but they were willing to say whatever it took to get you out of the store. It happens all the time there.
