I actually had the same thing happen to me except that my account was supposed to be closed period. After I moved out here to Ohio, I sent Wells Fargo a formal request to have the account closed as instructed through an email (since I did not have a physical branch in this area in which to close the account). Paypal accidentally pinged the old account instead of taking the funds off of my mastercard. I recieved a call from Wells Fargo stating that I owed them $37 for fees on an account that was supposed to be closed a year ago! And when I called them, they said that the account was reopened because it was pinged by Paypal and denied twice. They are trying to hold me responsible for the fees when all the while I was trying to explain to them that the account was supposed to be closed and by closed, I meant for good! The woman on the phone told me that the activity made the account reopen, which is simply ridiculous because that means that my account number could be stolen and any activity could reopen the account and be honored! This should be illegal.
