Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
I am a recent graduate of Westwood College (Denver South). I started school there in 2004. I went to school for Criminal Justice and was one of the first to graduate with that degree from Westwood. I DO NOT feel like I have learned anything new. I feel like I went into debt for no reason.

I am now in debt nearly $70,000 and am very afraid for the future. I should have quit when I had the chance. I will regret going to that school for the rest of my life. I'm going to break this up so that it's easier.

First: The instructors were bad. For most of the classes, we had the same "teacher." We (the students)never had to do any type of homework, there were no test, we never did any work in the class at all. Most of the class was filled with war stories from our teacher. The other half was filled with gossip and story telling by the students.

Sometimes the teacher would just put the computer on and find videos online to show everyone (like people getting shot, shooting themselves, getting run over, police chases etc). One class hour was filled by our teacher reading all the phone numbers out of his cell phone to the class to prove that he wasn't cheating on his wife. I learned absolutely nothing!

The way we got our final grade was by telling him what we thought we had earned in the class. Of course everyone would say "A" and that would be what you got. We didn't have to work for anything...and we didn't have to learn anything.

Second: Financial aid was horrible here. I still want to see where all my money went (I have NO idea where it all went). They never provided any proof of where my money went and how much I owed. They would always ask me for more money. They were always trying to make me switch the banks that I was getting my loans through. I went through Key Bank for beginning of my college year and after a few months Westwood college denied me the right to use that bank. When I asked why they wouldn't let me get my loan money through Key Bank they told me that Key Bank doesn't do loans for Westwood college anymore.

However, whenever I talked to Key Bank myself they would tell me that they would give me the loan money but Westwood college wouldn't let me use them. So, I had to switch banks. (They kept trying to get me to use Sallie Mae but I didn't want to).

Third: Career services is no help at all. They don't help people find jobs. All they do is send links through emails to jobs that you are either 1. over-qualified for (I.E. Security guard...they want me to be a security guard for $9.00 an hour when I have a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice...okay) or 2. under-qualified for (I.E. Chief of police, detective, or basically any other job out there since I went to Westwood). I need a job!!! I am in debt and I got no help so I told the school not to contact me anymore.

Which brings me to my current situation and the reason why I am reporting them. They never took any of my past complaints seriously. I wrote my program director and others complaining about class sizes, lack of training/skills, how bad I thought the learning experiences were, etc but no one really took me seriously. They would always make excuses. This time I am really angry and I want my money back!!!

I got an email 2 days ago from someone who works at the college. It stated that I am in danger of going into default on my student loans. My heart started pounding and I got really scared. I quickly looked up my loans and saw that I am in the 6 month grace period and owe nothing yet. So, I wrote the original person back who wrote the email and I wrote to financial aid and asked them what was going on. They said "oops." The one who wrote me stated that I needed to call to get the situation cleared up.

I was really angry that they would harass me like that and act like I was in danger of going into default. Keep in mind this happened after I've told them to stop emailing me! I consider this harassment.

All in all I just wanted to say that I wish I had the option of NOT getting my degree from them and giving all the money back to the banks (they can keep the degree). The degree is worthless. I don't want it. It won't get me a job. I paid money to get an education that will give me the skills to get into a career in criminal justice.

I didn't recieve any skills/training that will help me, therefore, I shouldn't have to pay for anything. This school was such a fraud. I hope no one has to ever go through what I've gone through. I feel like I've ruined my life.

Please contact me if there is any possibility of a lawsuit. I don't feel like I should have to pay for a service that I never recieved. Help me!!

I paid for an education and I didn't get one. I seriously want my money back!

WESTWOOD COLLEGE CREDITS ARE WORTHLESS

#2Consumer Suggestion

WARNING TO ANYONE THINKING OF GOING TO WESTWOOD COLLEGE! Here's the response the Registrar at the University of Central Florida e-mailed my son when he requested credit for coursework completed at Westwood College. "It seems that all of your transfer credit that can be posted has been. Westwood College is unaccredited in our system and therefore can not be posted as credit."

FILE COMPLAINTS WITH FEDERAL & STATE AGENCIES

#3Consumer Suggestion

Thu, July 05, 2007

In order to stop Westwood College from continuing to rip-off unsuspecting students and their families you must be methodical in the steps you take. It will be a long, and sometimes fruitless, process - but you mus try! After all, if enough students begin to file enough substantiated complaints - someone is bound to take some action. I would encourage you to file complaints with a minimum the following agencies and/or governmental offices: (1) local and state consumer service or protection agencies; (2) US Dept of Education; (3) Federal Trade Commission; (4) your respective Congressman and Senators (I'm sure they would be interested in knowing where millions of federal financial aide dollars are going in exhcange for little or no result); (5) your state attorney general; and (6) your local United States Attorney. Westwood College is engaged in a pattern and practice of racketeering and federal laws could subject them to criminal prosecution. A keen US Attorney could take the issue before a federa grand jury if enough witnesses were to come forward to testify as to their experience at Westwood College. A letter writing campaign to local and national news media (USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, FOX NEws, etc.) would bring attention to the complaints and give Westwood College a lot of bad publicy, which they probably don't want or need. I wish you good luck and don't be discouraged.

ALL PRIVATE TECH ED SCHOOL's ARE A RIP OFF ! ALL PRESPECTIVE STUDENTS NEED TO DO THEIR HOMEWORK

#5Consumer Suggestion

I was raised in Louisiana and have resided in Texas for the last 16 years. I attended college and Vo Tech Education in both states. although I am unfamiliar with the other 48 states educational systems, let me explain something about the difference in public Vo -Tech Education and a private career technical school. Louisiana is a notoriously poor state, and most work consists of the blue collar type of employment. Louisiana has public Vocational and Technical schools there because community college was pretty much non exisitant there until the mid 90's Some examples of this are the following schools I am familiar with. TH HArris Vo Tech, Opelousas, Louisiana and Lafayette Regional Technical, in Lafayette, Louisiana. Lets say a person is interested in taking something like Medical/Nursing/Pharmacy Assistant, Aircraft Mechanic, NDT, Business Office/Secretarial they pay a small tuition, say 200.00 for a quarter and pay for all their own books, and supplies. Student aid is offered. All the instructors are definately cerfified. The schools are run by the state public education system so they know that they cannot charge a person 25,000 to become a Nurse Assistant whose average wages are 9.00 an hour. My ex husband attened the public vo tech school in Lafayette, Louisiana and took Electronics Technology. When all was said and done he had paid approx. total 3,000 in tuition and another 1000 in books and supplies, and places like ITT Tech are charging people 50,000. Its a BIG SCAM!!! MY ex got an excellent post secondary education and even the opportunity to work for NASA. I do not know if other states have public vo tech education, however if a person wants to major in Criminal Justice go to either a 2 or 4 year college because if one wants to become a police officer, they will need at least 60 credit hours from either a 2 0r 4 year state college, not a private career school. Now if a person wants to take something like Sound & Recording Engineer they can attend a specialty private career school because most 2 year colleges or public vo tech schools will not offer this. But even with that said, still investigate the school and do your homework and stay on top of things and then you won't get a big SCAM!! If people would just investigate their state's employment web pages, average wages are stated for various careers and those wages are not some uninformed sales recruiter making a bogus sales pitch saying someone can earn 15.00 an hour as a nurse assistant. I have attended community college (Texas) 4 year college (Louisiana) and a for profit career school on line, however those studies were more about personal enrichment and additional knowledgement more than transferring credit courses. When I transferred my college credit from Louisiana I had 25 credit hours, Texas only accepted 15 and I had to take a CLEP test to test out of the rest of my English courses. If every future student in the US would accept this advice, they would all be much better off and for profit careeer schools with heavy handed sales tactics would be curbed down to very specialty schools and education for more comman careers would shift exclusively to community colleges and public vo tech schools if offered in their state.

I forgot to add one more thing: It seemed weird to me that I only had to sign a few of the loan checks that came in. I'm left wondering how they were able to cash the rest of the checks without my signature on them. I'm convinced they are ripping people off this way!! I want to see the checks to see which ones were signed by me.
