Karen: You are right about Westwood not being regionally accredited. Rather, they are fully accredited by ACICS. ACICS is a national (institutional) accrediting agency recognized by the United States government. The United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) are the agencies that recognize accrediting bodies in America. ACICS and the regionals are equally recognized by both of these agencies. Unfortunately, even though Westwood's form of accreditation is technically equal to regional accreditation according to the United States government, transfer between nationally and regionally accredited schools can sometimes be more difficult than regional to regional transfer. However, national to regional transfer can be accomplished, so please don't give up! Recently, CHEA created something called the Higher Education Transfer Alliance (HETA). Over 200 regionally accredited institutions have voluntarily signed on this alliance. By doing so, they are indicating that they will not reject credits from another school simply because that school is accredited by a different (but equally recognized) body such as ACICS. Westwood is by no means the greatest school, but they are a legitimate institution. Thus, the degree you worked so very hard for is definitely of value. And, even if you do not transfer, you should be proud of yourself and your accomplishment. Hopefully, though, you can put this bad Westwood experience behind you, and locate a regionally accredited school willing to accept your Associate's degree credit. The CHEA HETA database of participating schools that I mentioned above can be found at www.chea.org. When you get to the CHEA website, click on ?databases and directories?, then ?search HETA?, and see which schools in your area have signed on to the agreement. The regional accreditor that covers the area in which you live is North Central (NCA). According to CHEA, 85 NCA schools have signed on to CHEA. At least 11 of those schools are in IL. They are: ?.. Argosy University (Chicago, IL), College of Lake County (Grayslake, IL), Harry S Truman College (Chicago, IL), Kankakee Community College (Kankakee, IL), Lexington College (Chicago, IL), Lincoln Christian College and Seminary (Lincoln, IL), McKendree College (Lebanon, IL), Midstate College (Peoria, IL), Millikin University (Decatur, IL), Morton College (Cicero, IL), West Suburban College of Nursing (Oak Park, IL). If all else fails, you could transfer to a regionally accredited school that offers distance learning courses. There are plenty of big name and/or well respected universities (with online offerings) around the country that will accept ACICS credits. I wish you the best of luck!!!
