I am writing in regards to a puppy I purchased from Wright-Way Rescue on November 19 as a gift for my son's birthday. My son was looking forward to becoming a first time pet owner. He saved his allowance and birthday money for this puppy.

We selected the puppy from Wright way rescue after viewing several from your web site. My son, his dad and I came in the following day to see the puppy and purchased the puppy. The purchase price was $250.00, $85.00 of which was my son's own money that he had been saving for the day that he could have a dog. We took the puppy home and my son was playing with him holding him and, kissing him and letting the puppy lick him, within 30 minutes of that he had an allergic reaction. His face turned red, his eyes were watering, and he had trouble breathing and broke out in little bumps. I took him to the Doctor the following morning (Friday) and he was allergy tested, I was told that he was indeed allergic to dogs, along with cats and horses and was given a doctors note stating he is not to be around animals. He has been around pets before but at a distance never up close like this so I had no idea he was allergic to any. I contacted Wright-Way Rescue immediately (less than 24 hours from the purchase of T-pain) to let you know that we needed to return the pup. First I spoke to Virginia in your southern location, she was very nice and supportive and told me to immediately return the puppy and totally understood.

Upon arrival I asked the lady who runs the place (who is very rude, and cold) if I could have my sons $250 back and she said its not up to her, it is up to the board at the southern location which meets the first of every month. She said someone would contact me, no one ever did. I have been emailing someone and talking to them at the southern location and she told me she would submit it for me. I asked for names of who would be making the decision and was told that personal info could not be given. So I did as told and submitted my story and sons medical records After several weeks and calls I was just sent an email saying refund refused. No explanation nothing. I would think and hope under these circumstances my money will be refunded regardless of the no refund policy; it was less than 24 hrs and was due to my sons health. My son cried when he found out he couldn't keep his puppy, he asked why I have to have allergies. Its not right nor fair to keep his money, not only did his puppy he wanted so bad have to be given back but he also learned that day that he could never have a pet and that his birthday money was NOT being refunded.

I have never dealt with such dishonest people and a business before who claims they rescue animals. I am appalled that no one has even bothered to contact me directly regarding this. They kept my money for a puppy I had to return and resold it again and received more money and they call it all a donation that is not ethically correct. .

IN RESPONSE TO "Bought" a puppy for my son's birthday...

First and foremost...[per other user's response to your dilemma]:

You DID NOT purchase the puppy, you ADOPTED it.  It is a living creature that was to become a member of your household (family).  I have personally volunteered countless hours over the years at the facility and have had a professional relationship with most of management staff and board of directors and your situation is a common one.  That is a dog or cat being returned because of a number of reasons that could have not been predicted and I have never seen a situation where the entire amount was kept.  Especially if the puppy was returned within a 24 hour period.

SO...MY PERSONAL OPINION HERE:

You're not being completely honest about some of the facts.  I can guarantee that! Whether it is the time or reason of...or simply your unprofessional behavior towards management.  Wright-way Rescue are making a difference in this world and are literally saving 100' if not 1000's of lives (cats and dogs) every year.

MY ADVICE TO YOU:

Tell the truth!  If they are keeping your entire $250.00 there is NO WAY the puppy was returned within 24 hours and medical records were submitted to them in a timely fashion as well.  I know these people and the organization and there is a GOOD reason why your funds are being kept.

Thank you for this posting.  I would suggest taking them to small claims court and let a judge decide.  Put your complaint in writing and mail it to them and ask for a refund or you will take this to court.  Sometimes just doing that is enough, just be professional and persistent. I have just been accepted by Wright Way Rescue and can totally relate to your experience.  I have been researching pet adoption scams and your file came up.

When I got my last dog (not from there...but another rescue) my eyes kept swelling up and I kept having these 'reactions', they were allergic reactions but I would wash my hands and face each time.  I eventually grew a tolerance to it.  I'm sorry your son is going through this!

Now that you know of his allergic reaction I would totally try to work on building up his tolerance though.  Hopefully everything will work out for you.

do people just go get allergy tested for no reason, or when they have a reaction to something

Well first of all I live with my son and this is what he has wanted for a long time so its not a "gift" like you are thinking, this puppy was going to be a part of our home a part of our lives. How did I not know he was allergic, well I am not sure if you have allergies but ever one reacts different, my son has been around animals before and has never had a reaction like he did in our home with the puppy, the Dr. said it was probably because the saliva, when the puppy was kissing him. My mom has animals my sister has cats, but he was really never around theirs long enough or actually played with them like he did with the puppy. SO that is how I didn't know, its not like you just go get allergy tested you have to have a reason to... If I knew he was allergic I would not have spent $250 and NO it is not a donation it is a purchase, you pay you leave with something that is a purchase. you don't seem to understand what effect this has on my child now, how excited he was to finally have a dog, and have it all taken away. I do not appreciate your comments. This was something that was very hard and still very hard to deal with. As for being a rescue place I understand the cost is to help cover the immunizations and all but this puppy was 8 weeks and was not up to date and not spayed yet. Also in certain cases like this they have a board to review these problems.

You did not Purchase a Puppy, YOU ADOPTED IT. Nearly All rescues have this in the adoption contract. You are making a donation to cover the cost of what has been put into the animal. I.e spay, neuter, Immunizations, Food, care and more.

How did you not find out your son was allergic to Dogs while at the rescue? The place would have been teaming with Animal Allergens and if he is truly that allergic he would have had a allergic reaction while at the shelter.

BTW you should never give animals as Gifts! They are members of our families not toys to be discarded!
