Earlier this week I was told by New Century VW that my transmission was dead and all I could do was replace the whole thing (for a quoted $6,666) or try and sell my car for the pennies it would be worth with a bum transmission. Completely horrified, I decided I needed a second opinion and came to AAMCO Burbank, and thank god I did.
I spoke to Erik over the phone who helped calm me down a bit and assured me that the part that VW said was irreplaceable was in fact completely replaceable, and even if I needed a new transmission it would come nowhere near 6k, so already I'm feeling better. I bring my car in the next day (Erik offered to have it towed in if it couldn't be driven, but it seemed to be driving fine). The shop was packed, but nevertheless Erik calls a quick hour and a half later to say there is nothing wrong with my transmission. NO-THING. VW did have to replace my battery, and he said that sometimes low voltage can mess with a car's computer and it will give funky readings, so that may have messed up the dealership (but still, shouldn't they have known that and counseled me accordingly?).
All of this good news came to $0. That's right, COMPLETELY FREE for an external diagnosis (VW charged me $60 to deliver the bad "news").
Here's the skinny-- I am a girl, and I know nothing about cars. I hate taking my car in for work because I feel like I'm going to be taken advantage of and deceived at every turn. I gave Erik (and company) a print out of what the dealership told me was wrong-- they could have easily just corroborated the story and taken me for a couple thousand, but they didn't. They were HONEST and RESPECTFUL and I would feel very confident taking my car to them in the future. I interacted with three guys there, I only caught Erik's name but all three of them were exceedingly polite, helpful, and responsive.
Bad car news will come eventually, but good, honest mechanics are priceless and based on my experience there today, the guys at AAMCO Burbank are just that.

Hello i am responding to this story because i also was victim for their horrible scams that they are doing to their customers. I took my truck there a few days ago and spoke to ERIK the Team Lead. He said that the inspection would be free at no cost. I asked him "How long would the inspection take?" He said 4 hours. I told them Erik and his staff that i would be hanging out until the inpection was completed. They said no, we can give you a ride to you home. I said ok (how nice, NOT) they gave me a ride. I was expecting to get a call from them at the 4th hour for the results. I received a call 45 min later from Erik explaining to me that they found some damages to the transmission but according to Erik he said "the good news is that your transmission is in good condition, that their is not need to rebuild the tranny" he made me think that it was a simple repair only. Erik said that their is a fee of 996.00 to remove the tranny for the labor. He never explained to me about any type of fees that will be involved with the removal of any transmission until after the fact. Keep in mind everyone! Aamco has a system in place that scams their customers by telling them it will take 4 hours to complete inspection. While you are at home, they have a better chance of yoU authorizing them to MOVE forward with the repairs. They do it that way because if your at their shop and when you get that surprised outstanding high fee, you have a better chance to say f*** you and leave their shop. After removing the tranny, Erik called me and said that it will cost $4000.00 to repair it or $3500.00 to rebuild the tranny. Thats what i call BAIT AND SWITCH. Everyone please be very aware! DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR TO AAMCO IN BURBANK! ERIK AND NEIL ARE EXPERIENCE SCAMS AND RIPP OFFS. DO YOU RESEARCH AND YOU WILL FIND OUT SO MANY UNHAPPY CUSTOMERS THAT HAVE BEEN SCAMMED BY THEM.
