Started in Des Plaines, IL. AAMCO rebuilt transmission in May 2003. While driving it on the expressway to Detroit, it would not go into overdrive (4th gear) and the cruise control no longer worked. Took it to the AAMCO in Dearborn Heights who had it for 3 weeks claiming they were waiting for parts. Finally got the car back. Drove it for 2 months and noticed it was leaking transmission fluid.

Took it back to Dearborn Heights AAMCO. Had the car for a week and told me nothing was wrong. Drove the car for another month and noticed the transmission was still leaking. Took it back. They had the car for 3 more weeks and replaced the front pump and rebuilt it. Got the car back in Oct 2003. Drove the car 5000 miles and it completely died on I-495 in Washington, DC. Took the car to the Vienna VA AAMCO Center. They told me that the Dearborn Heights AAMCO had put a part in upside-down and had cross threaded bolts, etc... They had the car for 3 weeks, rebuilding the transmission again.

Drove the car for 100 miles and the transmission was toast. Took it back to AAMCO and they rebuilt the transmission again. Had it another week. When I got it back, I took it back to them and told them there was a whine in first gear. They assured me it was not problem. 4500 miles later, the transmission (2000 miles off of warranty) goes totally dead in West Point New York. AAMCO customer services says there is nothing I can do. It's off of warranty. Hell, they never fixed this car right. The best offer I've had it to tow it back to Des Plaines and they'll pull it apart and look at it and give me a "good deal" on another rebuild. Transmission Experts. Think again. Run, don't walk away for AAMCO. These guys are inept. There customer server representatives are nothing more than call takers who do little of nothing to help the customer. Avoid AAMCO. I am initiating legal action. If anyone is interested, perhaps we could get a class action going. This needs to stop.

the vehicle should have been fixed right the first time

I dont understand why you think paying to have you vehicle towed, which was breaking down due to shotty work which should have been covered by warranty is reasonable. whats reasonable is that the vehicle should have been fixed right the first time, and should not have taken five times at your time and expense to get it right.

After much discussion with AAMCO headquarters, they agreed to have the franchise in Mahopac, NY fix the car. The owner of the franchise was really wonderful to work with and the manager assured me that they would do their best to figure out why this transmission has failed 4 times since the initial rebuild. My only cost was to have it towed from West Point to Mahopac, a reasonable request (although not without a substantial cost, $184.00). Dennis (the Manager)returned the car to my son last week and asked him to bring it by at least every other week for the next month and a half. He even offered to come by West Point and check the car out if my son was unable to get by the shop to have it checked out. If this rebuild turns out to be as good as my treatment by the people at this franchise, I feel I will get at least a year or so decent service from the car, which is all I ever expected. I'll update this as time goes on.

While your at it call around and see what that transfer case sales for new or rebuilt they are advertised every where. See what one would cost with core exchange You may be able to get one cheaper than you would think. If so make them send yours so you can use it as a core exchange. Although I don't understand why any builder in a shop should be able to rebuild a transfer case I mean if he can really rebuild a trans then he should have no problem with your transfer case after all they are easier that a tranny.

I am currenty dealing with AAMCO on a very similar situation. I took my truck to an AAMCO in Charleston South Carolina. They did their diagonostic service and informed me I needed a new transfer case, and while they had it apart I told them to go ahead and replace the clutch as well. I was up there on vacation and the factor that contributed to my decision to deal with them was their advertisement of a Nation Wide Warranty and their promise of "Giving you prompt, courteous warranty service". Since then I have been to 5 different AAMCO's and my vehicle has spent a total of 2 months at AAMCO since leaving South Carolina, all pertaining to "bad instilation of the parts", as quoted by a manager at an AAMCO in Knoxville, TN. My transfer case finally failed on me a month ago 7,000 miles into the warranty, and my truck has been sitting in an AAMCO in Everett, WA since, the problem being is instead of giving me Prompt, Courteous service and fixing and installing the transfer case there, they sent it all the way across the country to South Carolina to be fixed. The manager in South Carolina has not fixed it yet, and I have not recieved one phone call from either shop informing me of what is going on. I have called the shop in everett once a day to find out the progress and they keep telling me, it should be here this afternoon and installed by tommorow. Finally after callint the manager in south carolina for three-and-a-half weeks the Manager from Seattle said the manager from South Carolina finally admitted his Transfer Case Rebuild Guy quit a month and a half a go so nobody has been around to fix my transfer case. He had been misinforming us even while asking to have it sent back to him. I too have contacted the customer service departement with absolutely no resolution. They now inform me that even though they have to totally repair and install the transfer case my warranty will still be void after the original date, of course my position on the situation is, if they have to re do the whole transfer case beause of bad work, they should also give me a new warranty to cover the work. I have started by submitting a written complaint to the FCC with a Cronological history of the events. If they advertise these warranties and this great service on the radio, internet, phonebooks, TV, and newspapers, they must adhere to it. Also, I am submitting complaints to the attorney generals in the states where I made contact with AAMCO. I am also investigating legal recourse to this situation, this has to be fraudulent in some form, and I am fully intent on persuing this, let me know what you come up with.

I had a manual transmission on a GMC S15 pickup repaired, actually just the clutch plate, and they charged me $1100.00 at AAmco. I found out this was way too much and also the first day I drove it some parts fell off the bottom and it would only go into 1st gear. I was pissed. I drove it back, slowly and they did fix it but the clutch plate wore out in about 10,000 more miles. I don't know what they did. Put a used plate in it? Adjust my old clutch? I did get under it later and tighten several lose bolts myself. I was charged a premium fee and they did way too shody work. Okay I did it later myself and it was hard to do but I got it back in right and it ran another 60,000 before I sold it. But 1100? All AAmco are not bad and all mechanics don't do shoddy work. AAmco, not me brother!

Arte, I totally agree with you this needs to stop! I am very interested in pursuing legal action, this is criminal in my book. Contact your state attorney general and any other state governing agencey such as your dept. of agriculture and consumer affairs if you have not already done so and file a written complaint. Also, call this ABC News affiliate station and ask for MONA at 813.354.2885. I know its a long distance call for you but they maybe able to get an affiliate in your area to help you, who knows with all of us working together on a state to state level, we could take this national and expose these scathing practices and get the justice we deserve! Best wishes!
