I bought my 2001 Chev Monte Carlo new. In December, 2002 my car would not start. COme to find out, my AC Delco battery had leaked acid and damaged the positive battery cable which runs to the starter. Because this was my first new car, I read the GM manual and it recommended using AC Delco batteries. I went to an AC Delco authorized repair shop and ended up paying $225 to replace the battery and cable. I was not aware at the time of the problems people were having with AC Delco batteries.

In February, 2004, just 14 months later, my car would not start again. Upon opening the hood, you could see the leakage from the battery. Since the battery was under warranty, and still not aware of the problem with Ac Delco batteries, I took my car back to the same repair shop. They were nice and told me that they didnt think I would have to pay anything since the defective battery damaged my cable. I picked my car up when the repair was done and was able to leave without paying. The battery was free and the repair for replacing the positive battery cable and the cable itself was $246.00. Well, two weeks later the repair shop called me and told me that they spoke to a regional manager for AC Delco in Atlanta and the manager told them that the best way to handle this is to have me pay the repair shop and Ac Delco will refund my money.

I don't know why I did it, but wanting to have trust in people, I went ahead and paid the shop to get the ball rolling on my refund. After reading other consumers problems getting refunds, I think I made a mistake in paying the repair shop. AC Delco really needs to recall these batteries. A mechanic friend looked at my car and was concerned that the leaking acid had come close to my air bag wires, which could make the bags go off suddenly while driving. I hope to get my refund and will keep you posted.
