These people are unbelieveable!! I got a call from my father who said he received a call from a Josh Gates, who identified himself as someone in the legal profession and I was in serious trouble. It runs out he also called my mother, brother and my sister-in-laws mother (how they connected me with her is beyond me) with the same story. This is before they even tried to contact me!

When I called, they said I owed $2621.00 on an old Citicard that I believed to be closed and paid off. They wanted me to wire them the money or give them my checking account number before I even investigated the matter, saying I "could always take it up with Citibank later"! I was flabbergasted as this is the first contact they had made with me, nothing via mail. I just mailed out a cease and desist letter. Any other tips for dealing with these idiots. Their illegal practices are beyond anything I have ever dealt with.

They did have my number as they called me last on their list, I believe it was to try and humiliate me to pay a debt that is not owed. They also did give my info out to relatives whether or not they are supposed to. They have violated several laws.

They are lowlife bottomfeeding JUNK DEBT BUYERS and sleazeball collectors. NEVER speak to ANY debt collector on the phone! NEVER!! Furthermore, Citibank is totally out of the picture regardless of whether the debt is valid or not. Third, it is illegal for them to pose as lawyers if they are not, and it is illegal for them to suggest you are in trouble, etc. File a complaint at ftc.gov online. FYI..There is no such thing as a "cease and desist" letter. As per the exact verbage of the FDCPA it is a CEASE COMMUNICATIONS request. This needs to be sent by certified mail, return reciept requested, and be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself and keep a copy for your records.

How they connected you to others? Collection agencies use a program that combines a credit database with public records databases. For the actual connections, if you listed your brother for example as a credit reference ever, part of this database will link you to your brother. If he listed his wife, and his wife listed her mother, you are linked to them. As for why they called them before you? A collection agency is not going to call relatives unless they don't have a number to contact you. Mainly becuase they can not give account information to 3rd parties.
