Several months after my wife died, I moved out of the home we had shared. The gas account had been in her name all this time. When I contacted the gas company, they told me I would be getting a refund of the balance I had overpaid.
A few months later, I received a check for the amount. I deposited it and thought nothing of making use of the funds now in my account. I was surprised to receive notice of an overdraft at my financial institution. The gas company had--after the two weeks after signing and sending, and the several days it took me to make use of some of the funds--stopped payment on the check, causing me to bounce several checks.
They refused to return the funds, saying that they needed proof of my late wife's death to justify sending the money. In the process, they caused me months of financial difficulties and brought up painful memories in the most abusive manner possible.
