I was in an auto aciident last August. I had neck and back pain to the point of sorta getting in a fix just sitting for long periods. I first sought out Chiropratic Care with a Trusted group featured on WSB here in Atlanta beginning around first of Sept. I was there for a good two hour evaluation, and was set up for subsequent visits at a location closer to me, for continuing Chiropratic sessions. Felt somewhat better after a few, but decided to try Physical Therapy instead for the first time. I Googled ones in my area and set up my first appt with Benchmark Physical Therapy. I visited their Athens location each time (total of 6......came once a week). My initial visit I noticed its in a strip mall. All Therapy is done in one big room. I remember asking what the seperate room was for (only 1) and was told it was for either overflow or a massage. There were 3 tables set up along the wall. You fill out several pages of paperwork on first visit including locations of pain and severity. A Therapist named Monica comes over and walks me toward the back. We talk maybe the first 5 or 10 min regarding what I am there for. A flat screen is on overhead with HGTV each and every visit. The therapist as well as her interns get distracted as to which house looks the best on Flip or Flop and continually look @ the TV during your session. After describing my pain, she gets me started on simple exercises. The first 10 min casually pedaling an exercise bike. Then I'm directed to do what seem like primary school exercises such as rolling a ball up the wall and doing arm Angels. Keep in mind NOONE has touched me during the first say 40 min. After doing the manual exercises, I'm asked to lie on one of the tables, we're all rowed up side by side, which is quite ackward. The therapists theN comes over and here we are at the tail end of the session, you lie on the table face up, she pulls and stretches on your neck for maybe 3 or 4 min. I actually get more of a head massage getting shampooed @ the hairdresser. She asks if you want heat stimulation, of course right? Who wouldn't? She hooks the small electrodes on you and there you sit 10 min tops. That part felt good. They tell me I'm done, receptionist asks when I want to return, I walk out. I did this same exact procedure 5 more times. Mind you @ this point, I have absolutely no clue what they are actually charging my insurance. I thought briefly @ one point to myself, ok Susan, this is more than likely a 75 to 150.00 each visit. I decide I'm done after the 6. Each time I walked in PT asked "Susan. How are you feeling today?" Each time I would say the same thing "Oh! About the same!" There was never any elaboration, no discussion on what was really bothering me, where the pain kept coming back, nothing! So I call my Insurance Claims Adjuster to let her know I'm done with PT. I thought it was a joke! I was not getting anywhere. i had set up an appt with a Rolfer, as I heard that 10 sessions of Rolfing gets your body back to when it should be. I ask my adjuster about getting it approved. She says get a referral. Done. I also decide to ask her @ this point what BPTherspy billed them for those 6 sessions. She hesitated and said "Well Susan. The cheapest bill was for 300 and something! I almost threw up! I had to pull over on the side of the road. She then proceeds to tell me they went as high as almost 800!!!!! I fell apart. I was stunned. I immediately called 3 locations and asked what I could have paid out of pocket for the same sessions. All 3 locations tell me 90.00!!!! I was stunned. I called the company. I called Office of Consumer Affairs. I contacted this, The Ripoff Report. I was told by OCA I had a GOOD case. I called Benchmark Rehab Partners begging for answers. 2 weeks later a guy named Robert calls me and after I mentioned my plans to expose this huge ripoff, He basically begged me to hold off. Said he could not explain the charges, was going to look into why they were so excessive, consult with the actual PT I saw and encourage her to do better, on and on and on. He basically asked me if refunding the $$ to my insurance would keep me from proceeding with what I went thru. I agreed that I'd hold off if he would contact my insurance co to get to the bottom of these charges that not one person has explained to this day. 3 weeks pass. I have to contact him again, he never bothers to get back. He says this time he's turned it over to billing and they would handle it. NO WORD!!! Nothing! I make 6 more calls. I get the runaround. My insurance to this day, has not heard a word from Benchmark except to submit another bill for 400 and something. So for 6 one hour sessions, Benchmark Physical Therapy charged a total of 3400.00!! Bills range from 785 to 360! All over the place for the same exact nothing each and every time! I would look around at the other adults getting therapy same time I was, we would all look at each other like "what is going on here?" How is this supposed to help us? That my friend was BEFORE I found out what they were actually charging! I'm so sick to my stomach about this whole thing. I had a 5000.00 medpay limit which is now gone, And got absolutely no help! I'm stunned. I feel like the dumbest consumer for not asking what they would be billing my insurance company. This will never happen again. Hopefully not for others either after I get the word out. I have every right as a consumer to get that word out also. I even called yesterday and got the billing codes and asked to speak with Monica to explain those codes, what did I get back? A call from an Attorney threatening me to basically shut my mouth (yep! I swear). I've turned this over to my insurance company to investigate, Whatever they conclude, I will not rest until others become wiser than I was! No one will stop me from that! Never ever been through anything so blatantly shady in my life, and hope to never again. Finding out I could have just paid 90.00 for each one hour visit out of pocket, THEN simply gotten reimbursed from then at least until I figured out it was useless therapy, Makes me so so nauseous!
