I would like to thank you for taking time to read my report about Best Buy. First, I find it proper that I introduce myself. I am an employee at the Best Buy store in Dublin, CA (#134). I am growing tired of Best Buys horribly corrupt practices directed at manipulation of both customers and employees.

I got a taste of what Best Buy was really like immediatly after I got a job. I was promised a pay raise of 10% within 6 months of employment. This was a stipulation of my employment. When the six months came around, I received no raises, despite my above average performance reviews and #1 Salesman ranking.

The practice I find most despicable is the way they deal with their returned merchandise. Lets say that you purchase a telephone, take it out of the box, and find it does not work. You bring it back to the store and you assume they always throw that model out right? Wrong! That Inspected By Best Buy tape means nothing. Often defective products are simply repackaged, marked down 10% and sold to the next person.

Service plans (PSP) are often misrepresented to comply with management set department quotas. Even though we are not commissioned there is immense pressure on us to sell this worthless plan that doesnt cover a majority of the problems that we come across.

Best Buys management is a key reason for the companies extremely high turnaround. Over the past year I have had 6 different bosses. They are often inept, immature, and cannot handle customers. Dealing with Best Buy is like talking to a brick wall, I highly recommend any other electronic retailer.

law suit Best Buy's illegal mistreatment of workers, expecially regarding their refusal to pay due overtime and adhere to federal guidelines

I'm happy you're having a good experience at Best Buy. Right now they are being sued by almost all the employees in the State of California under a class action lawsuit for the things that I described above. A major part of the law suit involves Best Buy's illegal mistreatment of workers, expecially regarding their refusal to pay due overtime and adhere to federal guidelines. And about the PSP's, they are worthless as they are sold. Realistically they are little more than an extendend manufacuter warantee.

I got my 3 mo. evaluation on the 2nd month and started receiving my very good raise. I love my managers and I was in sales. I got transferred to Geek Squad and love it there too. I love the customers and we are ethical. All Best Buy Stores aren't horrible as you make them out to be. Those PSPs are not always worthless because I've seen so many items come back that we had to fix and the customer would be SOL unless they had one. Thanks, I appreciate my job, sorry you don't D.A Valdosta Store 789

many things that I have learned from working at Best Buy

I stumbled upon this website, only to read some disturbing comments on Best Buy in Dublin. I have to tell you that there are many things that I have learned from working at Best Buy. I have worked with some incredible people and have served some of the nicest customers possible. But, I have also had to deal with people that are extremely rude, and think that because they purchase product, ie a phone or a dvd, that they can be verbally abusive and mean to myself and fellow employees. Your Performance Service Plans work to help you, without them your options with the manufacter are so bleak, they have a worse reputation then rebates. The idea that you wouldn't even "urinate" on the building is such a tell tell sign that you are the type of customer to come in and throw a temper tantrum. It is sad that your life is so miserable that you feel the need to spread your anger and self esteem problems on people trying to make a living.

Best buy in Dublin sucks. And, I can't say that enough. I wouldn't walk ten feet to urinate on their front door. They're not worth the effort. I purchased a phone with a "service" plan. Please, the only thing they serve is themselves. They wouldn't exchange the battery when it wasn't charging after a couple of month. They wouldn't replace the phone (after I bought a battery replacement and it still wouldn't charge.) They wouldn't give me a new charger or a refund on the service plan. At this point, I wouldn't buy AAA batteries from those clowns. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck. They suck.

I am sorry to hear about your poor experience with your raise. I do not know why someone would mislead you like that. If Best Buy takes back a defective product, it goes to service center or back to the manufacturer. It does not go back on the shelf knowingly defective. Service plans are a value to customers. The worst thing ever is when I have to tell a customer that there is nothing I can do for them when their manufacture's warranty is over. It saves the customers money on repairs, and also covers much beyond the original warranty. It sure sounds like you have bad bosses who aren't very good. But if you really look at things, I bet they care about you more than you think. If it is that bad of a place to work, why work there? Nobody is forcing you to.

In case you haven't noticed, corporate America is based on the ideal that "he who kisses the most behinds gets promotes the quickest". Your actual performance means little. I found that the people who are up for promotions, transfers to better facilities, etc. are the same people who suck up the the district managers. A person who takes the time to care for his own backyard often gets left behind while those who let the yard go to hell get the bump-up. I was in Best Buy management, I know how their scheme works. HOWEVER... I won't fault them for reselling products as open box. I'd say that 75% of the time an item comes back, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. That 75% can be classified into several groups: 1) Equipment smarter than operator. 2) Operator forgot to RTFM (Read the F***ing manual). 3) Idiot operator errors. Are a few itmes going to slip by, yes, but most of that product is simply being sent away as bad when it's just as good as the new stuff in the box.

I too ran into the same problem with employees at Best Buy. In my experience, those who are the best at stabbing others in the back are the most promotable. If you're a manager and you mess up...they don't fire you, they move you up. Trust me when I say even at the corporate middle management levels (levels 8,9, and 10) you'll find some of the stupidest SOBs on the face of the planet. Anyway...I digress.... As for your 10% pay increase. It SHOULD have happened if you were #1 in sales. The only time they don't give it to you is when you have signifigant performance issues (which apparently you didn't). The sales staff doesn't work on commission, correct...but those managers that push you to sell them and will fire you if you don't CERTAINLY get paid their bonus checks every month. The incentive for the sales staff (if you can call them sales...product and service pushers is more like it) is to keep their job and once a month win a certificate and a hand shake from the GM. The manager's incentives are cash related.
