Cambece Law Firm has been calling my parents for the last 2 months (nearly every day). They are looking for me in an attempt to collect a debt to the tune of $4,812. I haven't lived with my parents in 4 years and am very easy to find in the phone book, however they keep on calling.

I have called them directly where I have given my contact information to two different people. The very first time I called I was answered with a "Yeah, what's up?" Not that this has anything to do with the crux of the problem, but it just indicates the type of people employed by this SUPPOSED law firm. After speaking to this man, I was then transfered to some type of supervisor who was not only rude, but also compeletely ignorant of the law.

She ranted and raved at me about how I owe this debt and I must pay it in its entirety or they will sue me and take me to court. I told her that it was impossible for me to get this type of money. Her rebuttal to that was that I need to ask my family for the money. What a joke! I told her that under no circumstances would I ask my family for money that THEY do not owe. This was followed up by a deluge of complete lies. She told me that if I did not pay this money immediately, I would lose my job, I would never (as in NEVER) be able to purchase a home, get a car, or be allowed to enroll in college. The rediculousness of her assertations nearly caused me to laugh because I know this information is not true. I again told her that it was impossible for me to pay this money in a lump sum and tried to offer to make monthly payments. This still was not satisfactory. She told me that she would recommend to her company that they take me to court. Frankly, I could care less because you can't "flog a dead horse." Before I hung up with this woman I specifically asked if she and her cronies would cease their consistant harrasment of my parents and was told that since they have my contact information now, they would not receive any more calls.

Guess what, they lied! Since my conversation with these supposed professionals my family has continued to receive calls daily. I am at my wits end! I wish I could take THEM to court. My parents are contacting the Better Business Bureau and the FCC.

You might be able to take them to court

Gabrielle, you just may be able to "take them to court." Debt collection by third parties (people other than the original creditor) is governed by the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. This set of laws only allows calls to outside parties (i.e. your parents) for purposes of obtaining contact information. Calling a debtor's parents, neighbors, employers etc. for any purpose other than finding out how to get in touch with the debtor is a violation of the Act. As they already have your contact information, the only conceivable reason they would be calling your folks is to cause you embarassment. This is a serious violation of the FDCPA. And, if I'm not mistaken, the FDCPA allows for statutory damages for such a violation. In other words, you can sue them and receive a monetary award even if you have suffered no actual monetary losses (if my understanding of the FDCPA is correct). It may be a good idea to find an attorney who is willing to give a free initial consultation to see if you have a case. The punitive provisions of the FDCPA are meant to prevent exactly what has happened to you, and they are of little use if they are never utilized. I'm not sure that lodging complaints with the BBB and FCC (did you mean to say FTC?) would do you any good. If this is indeed a law firm, a bar association would probably be a better bet.

I am also from Texas and have recently been contacted by this same supposed law firm. They have left several messages on my anwsering machine but each time i tried to call the numbers left i either got that the phone number i dialed was out of service or a busy signal. Then i receive a letter stating that i owe in excess of 3k to some company in colorado (i have never had an account with the company listed) and also to help anyone out who lives in texas who is contacted by this group in regards to credit card debt, the only thing that they could do is to put on lein on a house if you own your own if not there is nothing they can do other than harrass you and screw up your credit. This is the first i have ever heard of this company and still have not been able to reach them by phone, but after reading what i have read on this site i assure you that i will take my own actions against them.
