Complaint Review: Carl Preston Smith - Benchmark Roofing - UPLAND California

I have not been able to find another complaint.  I checked through my records, former employees, including my General Manager Scotty Barclay.  WE have always responded to many and all complaints and have resolved them where we can. I will never , ever hire another person in Rehab, or a criminal in and out of prison and doing drugs, stealing from me and others.  oNE OF HER REHAB PEOPLE THAT KNOWS HER WELL SAYS SHE WAS PLANNING ON HUSTLING ME And my company for money.  Then she would have her MOTHER recind these lies .  This has been an unbelievable experience.  What scum bags these people are.  I am surprised her Mother would assist her Daughter Tammi Duran in these scams.  No wonder her daughter turned out the way she has.  Too bad.  I feel sorry for the two children.

I am curious to know why Carl Smith did not answer the other complaint against him that is also on this site. That complaint was made by a customer, an elderly lady that was ripped off by Carl. Tammi did not file this complaint, as Carl stated. But she was the employee. Although she was only the driver, she helped the roofer (it was a one man and one driver operation) on a daily basis. The roofer can't speak English, nor can he drive, so Tammi's job was to drive him from one job site to the next, and to the yard for supplies, etc. Carl might be interested to know that there is documented proof of the APOC, the hours worked, the job sheets, etc. All were kept as proof, because the employee was afraid of Carl's temper, and his "in" with law enforcement and judges. The "Caucasian" that was on the job site is Tammi's boyfriend, another parolee that is actually trying to stay on the straight and narrow. Both he and Tammi are drug free and doing well. Thay also both kept the proof of what they were required to do while working for Carl Smith, because they didn't like doing it, and knew they were going to quit.

Answers to Complaint item by item. Person complaining is Tammi Duran a former employee as a driver only. Did not do roofing at all nor knew anythng about roofing. Another employee told us she did this report. Thats how we learned of your site. I have been in business 38 years and have a good reputation. Any complaints are handled and not ignored. We have done millions of square feet of roofing, residential, county and state. Can furnish thousands of references if need be. We are a family owned business and take pride in our work. We try to help parolees and give them a second chance, since 1982. Many have worked out and moved on to their own business which we have helped them do. Of course many have failed. Our employees are not listed with the State Contractors Board, and companies do not do this. Our salespersons are listed with the State. The Benchmark product that is mentioned in her report is WHITE NOT BLUE. It is a title 24 energy saving system. She is obviously not familiar with the products or she would have known this. Again Tammi was just a driver nothing else. The job in Norwalk was not $3000.00 as she stated. The employees on this job start with Osvaldo Bonilla, supervisor a 12 year roofer, Kevin, a caucasian and Tammi was the driver. We carry our own material inventory at our yard on 9th Street in Upland. We did not buy APOC as stated by Tammi. The Gamay job Tammi referred to, 3 times Tammy drove the guys to the job and could not get the right 3 tile that was needed. The other tile job she talks about did have wind damage. We replace tile and found a hole in the roof. We replaced wood, refelted and re-laid tile-no charge to customer. The customer was upset with Tammi as she tried to collect money from customer under the table. We had already spoke to the real estate agent and told her there would be no charge. We can provide names of the customer and the real estate agent involved and they would be glad to testify to this. She mentioned another tile job. We met a former customer. nine years ago, at home and he had 4 damaged areas. We bought 21 tile, refelted and charged $450.00. The other bids were over $1400.00. Why she is mentioning the Estate of David Walker I do not know. I allowed Tammi and her boyfriend to live in the house for 2 months rent free. The property had a 3 acres of scrape metal that the County of San Bernardino wanted removed promptly. We allowed Tammi to use a company truck to haul away the scrap metal and keep the money that it was worth. The neighbors she said were mad because they had wanted to do it. That is so, but they were not doing the job so we allowed Tammi and Kevin to do it. They were able to buy a car with the money that they made. Also clothes and other items for Tammi's daughter whom she saw for the first time in 8 years. She lost her thru the courts. She mentions that I act like a Christian. I am a Christian and attend church in Phelan. The Pastor Larry Ross is a distant relative. Why this was brought into this I do not understand. She wanted to attend Church so we referred her to Pastor Larry Ross. She went 1 time as far as we know. I am a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club in Rancho Cucamonga and did live there for 24 years. I know many people in the area but do not know of any judges that I have an in with. I do not go to court. I am Vice President of the Lions Club in Wrightwood. Tammi Duran has spent the last 10 years of her life in prison for theft and drug sales and other crimes. I hired her against my wife's wishes, as a driver only. She and Kevin needed a place to live so we tried to help them out. They were not taking care of the grounds and items were missing and I spoke to her about this. When I talked to her about this she got mad and skipped out before I could get up there to see what all she had stolen. I had also let her go at work because the other employee she drove were complaining about her. He refused to work with her. She was very upset over this. We hired her boyfriend because he could work. She did the driving and never got Kevin to work on time. We even lost a job because she did not show up with Kevin until noon time and we were supposed to be on the job at 8:00 a.m.. We then went to the house where we let them live and many items were missing. We have filed a police report with the San Bernardino Police department. Tammi is also on disability for metal problems which her boyfriend verified with us. Kevin was very grateful for helping them out. Tammi lost custody of her daughter years ago and her dad and stepmother adopted her. She is only allowed short visitations with her daughter who lives in Arizona. All of this can be verified and can provide numbers of all who are involved with this. Thank You, Carl P. Smith
