dear frustrated consumer , I am a current tech at the laurel store, before this I worked at ford dealers for 15 years , contrary to what you where told by ford, this is a common problem, but isolated only to trucks around your year model , the digital read out will almost majically turn its self on and off. the first time received a vehicle with this concern I could not get it to happen, even called the customer to pick up vehicle, then when I was going to take it out of my stall bam! no read out. I call the ford tech line about the problem, they knew of the problem, but offered no reason for it , the just advised me to replace it with a new cluster, your cluster has a module in it (computer), that acually stores and displays the milage , and it seems to develop a problem with the readout , simular to your monitor for your computer. When we had to replace them we had to send the milage if available so that the new module can be programmed, after which you HAVE to send back the old one to be reprogramed repaired and used in another vehicle . that is why you could not get your old module because then the dealer would have to pay the "core value" for not sending another one in. I oun a 2000f150 and it had the same thing happen to it. and justso you know even with the dealers expensive diag tools you cannot access the module to change the milage on the odometer so I bealive that your reading is as correct as the person who sent it in . I hope some of this info helps you . I believe that every thing that was done for you was correct , eventhough it dident seem correct...
